ELLO GOES VIRAL, THE WRONG ELLO THAT IS

IMG_5501San Francisco, California (The Adobo Chronicles) – Everyone seems to be talking about Ello, the new, invite-only and ad-free social networking site that is making Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg really really nervous.

Ello was created by a group of seven well-known artists and programmers as a simple, beautiful, and ad-free place to share artwork and connect with friends from around the world.

In its ‘About’ page, the founders state: “We built Ello because virtually all the other social networks were cluttered, ugly, and full of ads. We began to feel manipulated by the networks themselves — many of our posts were never seen by our friends at all, because ads had taken priority. We came to realize that a social network that has ads is a social network created for advertisers, not for people. Every move we made was tracked and recorded, and every post we made was read and sold to other companies so they could show us more ads. It wasn’t fun any more.”

Although still in its beta (trial) stage, Ello has already gone viral.

Alas, it is the wrong Ello. As millions of excited netizens googled the new site, something else kept coming up: an obscure nutritional products company with the same name, based in Monroe, Michigan. Owners of the Ello Corporation couldn’t be any happier with their free advertising.IMG_5499

The founders of Ello, the social networking site, blamed the situation on Apple iOS 8’s autofill feature.  When people type Ello.co (which is the correct URL) for the site , autofill adds ‘m’ thinking that they are searching for Ello.com, which is the URL for the Michigan nutritional company.

LEA SALONGA APOLOGIZES TO FANS FOR FACEBOOK TANTRUM

Manila, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Yesterday, The Adobo Chronicles reported that Tony Award-winning Filipina actress Lea Salonga used her Facebook account to complain about people calling her ‘tita,’ a Tagalog word meaning ‘aunt’ or ‘auntie.’ She was apparently irate being called the term by peole who are not her “nephews, nieces, godchild or colleague.”

Salonga’s post was considered rude, elitist and diva-esque by many of her own fans who reacted with disgust on the comments section of her Facebook post. Many of the comments pointed out that calling someone ‘tita’ is a revered Filipino custom of showing respect, much like people in Hawaii showing respect by calling women ‘auntie.’

Today, on the eve of the 25th anniversary of ‘Miss Saigon,’ the musical that brought her worldwide prominence, Salonga apologized to her fans.

“If I hurt anyone with my words, please forgive me. But I’d still prefer not to be called ‘tita.’ It makes me feel old,” she said.

So, how then should she be addressed by fans?

“You can call me ‘Aling Lea.’ It sounds better with my name than ‘Tita Lea,’ ” she pointed out.

‘Aling’ is a a contraction of the Tagalog words ‘ale ng’ (miss or mrs. of) and shows respect for a woman who is not necessarily a relative or colleague. It is the male version of ‘Mang’ as in ‘Mang Tomas.’ As in ‘Mang Tomas Lechon.’

To Aling Lea, apology accepted. It does sound better. Aling Lea. Miss Lea. Miss Saigon.

FACEBOOK, GOOGLE+ TO ACCOUNT HOLDERS: USE REAL NAMES ONLY OR ELSE…

The Joker

Silicon Valley, California (The Adobo Chronicles) – If you have an account with Facebook or Google+, you can no longer use the name ‘The Joker.’ Unless, of course, your real first name is The and your real last name is Joker (or vice versa, since in some Asian cultures, the last name comes first before the given name, like Tran James).

The pseudonym ban has been in effect on Google+ since 2011, in keeping with the company’s common names policy. But Facebook recently joined in the bandwagon, theatening to deactivate accounts using fake names or pseudonyms.

This new policy has upset Sister Jane, Sister Lovely and Sister Biatch — all members of San Francisco’s Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. “These may not be our real names when we’re not in our religious habit, but they are not fake names when it comes to our alter persona,” Sister Jane said.  “Who would think of me as a nun if I used my real name,” Sister Biatch, whose real name is Peter Bonavich, said.

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, also called Order of Perpetual Indulgence  is a charity, protest, and street performance organization that uses drag and religious imagery to call attention to sexual intolerance and satirize issues of gender and morality. At their inception in 1979, a small group of gay men in San Francisco began wearing the attire of nuns in visible situations using high camp to draw attention to social conflicts and problems in the Castro District.

The new Facebook policy seems to be backfiring.  A quick scan at Facebook accounts shows an increasing number of netizens named Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, Michele Bachmann, Sarah Palin, Jeremy Lin and LeBron James — real names all.
