ANOTHER U.S. MEDIA MERGER

onion-cnn-300x300Atlanta, Georgia – The bleeding in the country’s newsrooms never seems to stop.  All around the country, newsrooms are laying off personnel. Newspapers are paring down their circulation.  Television news networks are moving more and more towards entertainment content.  Above all, mergers between and among media companies are becoming a weekly occurrence.

The latest announced merger is between Cable News Network (CNN), the pioneer in 24-hour broadcast news, and  The Onion, the pioneer in organized news satire. Many in the journalism profession saw it coming, especially after CNN.com’s managing editor Meredith Artley appeared as a guest columnist in the latest issue of The Onion.  Artley’s column delved on why CNN.com made Miley Cyrus’ almost pornographic performance at the last Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards its top story on Monday.

CNN CEO Jeff Zucker, in making the announcement at the network’s headquarters in Atlanta, said that the merger of the two media outlets cannot be more perfect. “It’s a partnership made in heaven,” Zucker said.  “Time and again, consumers of news have seen the parallelism between the CNN and The Onion styles of reporting. Both outlets excel in entertainment, sensationalism, and fakery,” he added.

The Adobo Chronicles interviewed people on the street to get their reaction to the merger.  One avid news consumer was ecstatic, saying that “finally, I do not have to decide which news is true and which is fake.  Now I know to consider this one (merged) news source as totally fake.”

CNN TO ACQUIRE ENTERTAINMENT CHANNEL

cnn-logo1Atlanta, Georgia – Cable News Network (CNN) has announced that it is acquiring the E (Entertainment) Channel and that it is transitioning out of its normal news content.  The announcement came just days after Al Jazeera America debuted on U.S. television sets beginning Tuesday this week.  CNN was apparently threatened by the Qatar-owned international news network that boasts of news bureaus around the world, from the Philippines to South Africa.  Al Jazeera America promised news programming that is less sensational, less opinionated, more in-depth and more accurate.

CNN’s top officials acknowledged that the network cannot compete with the resources and talent that is being brought into the American market by Al Jazeera television.  Additionally ratings after ratings show that the number of CNN viewers in the U.S. have declined over the years, claiming only half the viewership of FOX News which maintains its lead over all the other cable news networks.  CNN is second in ratings, followed by Headline News (HLN) and MSNBC. images

On the other hand, CNN has found its niche in entertainment television, as shown by its recent coverage of the George Zimmerman trial and the wait for the arrival of England’s Royal baby.  The network’s ratings also went up each time it covered celebrity gossips — from Lindsay Lohan to Justin Bieber.  CNN also admitted that its political pundits and so-called experts are getting a bit old and tired of doing the same thing, 24 hours a day.

E-Entertainment-LogoBy purchasing the E Channel, CNN expects to recover from its financial losses and gain monopoly of big-time advertisers that usually support Hollywood-type content. CNN is also expected to eventually phase out its sister network, HLN.

Atlanta, Georgia – A joint CNN and FOX News poll shows a sharp shift in American voter preference for the 2016 presidential elections.  A huge  majority of the 10,000 likely voters polled from acoss the 50 states are now gravitating towards women. Republicans and Democrats alike have chosen an all-women field for their top three choices for the next U.S. president.  While the 4th and 5th places on both the Republican and Democrat sides were men,  the poll numbers were too insignificant and way below the 3% margin of error.  CNN and Fox chose not to reveal the names of the potential male candidates because the networks would not want to embarrass them. Not surprisingly, there was a 3-way tie in the Republican poll. Here are the poll results:

DEMOCRATS:                                                            REPUBLICANS:

1. Hillary Clinton, 45%                                        1. Sarah Palin, 33.33%

2.  Elizabeth Warren, 40%.                                  2. Michelle Bachmann, 33.33%

3. Caroline Kennedy, 14.9 %.                              3.  Jan Brewer, 33.33 %

Top: Palin, Bachmann; Bottom: Brewer, Kennedy, Warren
Top: Palin, Bachmann; Bottom: Brewer, Kennedy, Warren

The CNN-FOX News poll did not pit the Republican and Democrat candidates against each other. “That will be for the next poll,” a joint statement from the two networks said.
