Filipinos Love Their Beauty Queens, But This One?

img_6759MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Strike one: she asked fellow contestant Miss Austria if Adolf Hitler was from her country. Strike two: she said of Miss Ecuador: her nose, chin and breasts were all fake.

“She” is Miss Philippines Earth Imelda Bautista Schweighart who was the country’s representative to the recently concluded 2016 Miss Earth Beauty Pageant held in Manila.

Schweighart who didn’t make it to the pageant’s semi-finals was heard and seen on video tape asking Miss Austria the dreaded question, and telling fans about Miss Ecuador’s “fakery.”

Miss Ecuador, Katherine Espin, won the title.

Filipinos love their beauty queens, but when a beauty queen embarrasses them, that’s a different story.

Schweighart has since tendered her resignation as Miss Philipines-Earth.

We hope this unfortunate incident will be buried beneath the earth.

The Cry Babies of Philippine Media: Rappler And GMA News

img_6768MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – First, it was Rappler that made a big hullabaloo about the fact that a political blog by a non-journalist entertainer has generated more social media engagement and following than its Maria Ressa-owned and foreign-funded news outlet.

Rappler spent a lot of staff time and content space “analyzing” why Mocha Uson’s Facebook blog is significantly more popular.  It went to the extent of blaming Facebook’s algorithms to justify the fact it is less read and followed by Filipino netizens.

Now, another sinking news media, GMA news,  is abandoning its very core purpose of reporting on news-worthy (not to mention fair and accurate) developments in the Philippines by harnessing its resources to police the Internet.  It recently launched what it called “Hindi Tama,” which supposedly is out to call the public’s attention on “fake” or “inaccurate” news.

It is a sad state of Philippine news media when “legitimate” news outlets like GMA and Rappler would rather spend their time attacking Internet information sources that they feel make them totally irrelevant and insignificant.

Expect all the other biased news media like ABS-CBN and Inquirer to follow suit.

Long live citizen media!

Washington Post Prints November 9 Edition In Advance

IMG_6640.PNGWASHINGTON, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles, Washington Bureau) – Who could forget that embarrassing headline in The Chicago Daily Tribune on November 3, 1948 when the newspaper ran the banner headline, “Dewey Defeats Truman?”

The opposite was true, however. President Harry S. Truman won an upset victory over Republican challenger and Governor of New York Thomas E. Dewey in the 1948 presidential election.

One would think that newspapers of today will do all they can to prevent a repeat of that 1948 fiasco.  But not The Washington Post.

The Post is so confident that Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton will win in a landslide over her Republican opponent Donald Trump in November 8’s U.S. presidential election that it had decided to print its November 9, 2016 edition in advance.

Harry TrumanSources close to Jeff Bezos, owner of The Post, said that the newspaper had pre-printed 1 Million copies, about three times its average daily circulation.  Bezos said their November 9 edition will sell like hot cakes.

The headline reads: “Madam President!”
