Cardinal Tagle Says Filipino Catholics Should Follow Humble Leaders Like Duterte

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – In what is being seen as the most positive endorsement yet of President Rodrigo Duterte by the Catholic Church in the Philippines, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle has urged Filipino Catholics to follow “humble leaders” like Jesus Christ.

Immediately, the Filipino faithful interpreted Tagle’s statement to be in reference to Duterte who is known  to always bow in humility to his private or public audiences. Duterte is also known to have kept humble practices even as President, such as sleeping inside a mosquito net in his own bed in Davao City, or eating meals, sans utensils,  in carinderias. It is also a known fact that Duterte likes to serve simple Filipino cuisine such as monggo and maruya even in state dinners.

Political Candidates Off Limits To Baguio City This Holy Week

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Baguio Bureau) – It’s election campaign season in the Philippines and with it comes the gun ban and the liquor ban.  The Summer Capital takes it a step further: it has decreed  that all political candidates are off limits all throughout the Holy Week which starts today, Palm Sunday. The ban ends rhe Monday after Easter Sunday.

Baguio City expects some 100,000 tourists to come up this week to escape the scorching weather in the lowlands.

As expected, political candidates, especially those running for national office— the  Senatoriables — would want to take advantage of this unique opportunity to court votes for the May 13 elections.

Enter the Catholic Diocese of Baguio, along with the pious officials of the city government.

In a joint decree which has the full effect of law, the two groups have declared that political candidates must not be seen in public all week so that tourists can focus on their Lenten obligations and shopping sprees without any distraction from political campaigners.

Political candidates who show up in Baguio this week will be given citations and be subject to flagellation  in front of the Baguio Cathedral, in keeping with Filipino Catholic  Lenten tradition.

Leave it to Baguio to create its own rules. No smokimg in public. No cussing in public. No campaigning in public.

Philippine Catholic Bishops Openly Support Opposition Senatorial Candidates

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Since time immemorial, Catholic bishops  belonging to the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) have been discreetly supporting political candidates who are mostly in the Opposition.

But gone are the days of discreet.

Today, Filipino bishops are openly endorsing anti-Administration candidates including the eight senatorial candidates of the political party Otso Diretso.

The bishops were recently photographed  attending an Otso Diretso  campaign rally somewhere in Metro Manila, dressed in full clerical regalia.

They even provided the entertainment for the sparse crowd by performing a well-loved Philippine folk dance, Pandanggo sa (D)ilaw.
