MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) –  Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has been criticized for recently comparing himself to Adolf Hitler (although it was actually Ex-President NoyNoy Aquino who first did).

Well, the heat is off Duterte.

A Filipina beauty queen has taken over the spotlight for her comment about Hitler.

Imelda Bautista Schweighart, who is competing in Miss Earth 2016, made the comments about President Duterte during a pageant video posted on social media.  She compared her country’s president to Hitler for the way he is trying to eliminate drugs.

While posing with Austrian counterpart Kimberly Budinksy, Ms Schweighart asked her if Hitler was from Austria.

“That’s a bad question because we normally don’t really talk about Hitler. But yes, he is,” Ms Budinsky answered.

Schweighart replied, “No offense meant. I’m half German so I just wanted to make sure that Hitler was really Austrian and not German.”

End of story.

The Miss Earth Pageant will be held in Manila on October 29.  Stay tuned.

Philippines: US Warships Pack Up, Seen Loading Crates Of Balikbayan Boxes

IMG_6322.PNGSUBIC, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Four US warships left this free port on Tuesday, a day before the scheduled conclusion of this year’s joint military drills between Filipino and American troops.

The maneuvers called Philippine Amphibious Landing Exercise (Phiblex 33) ended on Monday, although the drills were scheduled to run until Wednesday. The exercises involved 500 Filipino soldiers and 1,400 American troops.

It was not clear whether the early end of Phiblex 33 was a response to President Duterte’s recent assertion that the joint exercises were the last of his six-year presidency.

Mr. Duterte has also said he wants US forces out of Mindanao island so he can talk peace with Moro separatists who have not forgotten US atrocities there during the Moro wars of the early 20th century.

US Marines from the USS Bonhomme Richard and the USS Germantown were seen loading military vehicles and other equipment back to their ships on Tuesday noon. The ships were scheduled to leave later that day.

The USNS Fall River and the USS Green Bay left the port on Tuesday morning, according to the seaport department of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority.

In addition to the military vehicles and equipment, the four US ships were seen being loaded with crates and crates of balikbayan boxes — those corrugated boxes containing tax-free goods brought in an out by expatriates and returning Filipinos.

In a statement issued today by the Bureau of Customs (BOC) the US ships did not violate any Philippine law because the Americans were considered balikbayans.  They have been residents of the Philippines for decades during the time when America maintained US military bases in the country.

“The Americans who were here for the military drills were considered returning citizens and as such were each entitled to the number and contents of balikbayan boxes as permitted by existing law,” BOC said.

President Duterte’s Approval Rating Dips To Minus Five Percent Amid Miss Universe Rumors

img_6222MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – The Philippines’ Daily Inquirer is reporting that it is rumored the Miss Universe Beauty Pageant scheduled to be held in Manila this coming January is being cancelled. The report cited security concerns as well as Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s recent comments about the Jews as among the reasons for cancellation.

In recent weeks, the country’s Department of Tourism has denied the cancellation rumors.

Rumor or not, beauty contest-obsessed Filipinos are not happy. You can mess with anything else but not their beauty pageants. Miss Universe especially.

img_6223In a nationwide survey following the Inquirer report, Duterte’s approval rating nose-dived from 97% to minus 5%. Respondents overwhelmingly cited the cancellation rumors as their only reason for the negative rating they gave the president.

The Adobo Chronicles asked Presidential Communications Secretary Martin Andanar about the Inquirer report and he said he has not spoken to Duterte about it.

Reigning Miss Universe Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach of the Philippines meanwhile said, “No comment.”
