Maria Ressa Re-Arrested, U.S. Dollar Bail Fell Short

4EC0FDE4-B441-42C8-A5EB-6BAFE3675E13MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Rappler CEO Maria was recently arrested on anti-dummy law charges soon after she arrived at NAIA.  But despite all that airport drama, she was  released after she posted the required P90,000 bail.

Today, however, the Philippine National Police (PNP) re-arrested Ressa and she is now detained at Camp Crame, just meters away from Senator Leila De Lima’s jail cell.

The Adobo Chronicles contacted PNP to clarify matters regarding Ressa’s re-arrest.

Apparently, Ressa posted bail in U.S. dollars (she is a dual citizen). However, her lawyers failed to check on the  U.S. dollar-Philippine peso exchange rate at the time she posted bail. It turned out her dollar bail payment, when converted to PH pesos, was short by P90.

So Ressa is back behind bars.

Exclusive Interview With Leni Robredo On Maria Ressa

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – We recently ran into Philippines Vice President Leni Robredo while she was waiting for a provincial bus on her way back to her hometown of Naga City, and we asked for her thoughts on Rappler CEO Maria Ressa.

Here’s a full transcript:

AC: Ma’am, some 43,000 Filipinos recently signed an online petition asking the Department of Justice to revoke the dual citizenship of Maria Ressa for alleged violation of the law. Any comments?

Robredo: Kaunti lang yan (that’s not a whole lot). That’s just 43 x u100.

AC: What are your thoughts about Ressa being arrested multiple times?

(We’re not saying to give her special treatment. But as far as I am concerned, if she broke the law, cases should be brought against her and penalize her if found guilty, but it seems she is being singled out.)

AC: Ma’am, but cases WERE brought against her. That’s the reason she had warrants of arrest.

Robredo: Ah, uhm, ah…. No more questions. Magmerienda na lang tayo (Let’s just have some snacks.)

Philippine Catholic Bishops Openly Support Opposition Senatorial Candidates

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Since time immemorial, Catholic bishops  belonging to the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) have been discreetly supporting political candidates who are mostly in the Opposition.

But gone are the days of discreet.

Today, Filipino bishops are openly endorsing anti-Administration candidates including the eight senatorial candidates of the political party Otso Diretso.

The bishops were recently photographed  attending an Otso Diretso  campaign rally somewhere in Metro Manila, dressed in full clerical regalia.

They even provided the entertainment for the sparse crowd by performing a well-loved Philippine folk dance, Pandanggo sa (D)ilaw.
