SENATOR HARRY REID ADMITS: “I’M NO SMARTER THAN A 5TH GRADER”

imageWashington, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles) – In a speech before the Asian Chamber of Commerce in Las Vegas last Thursday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) delivered a couple of punch lines that many consider to be racist and insensitive to Asian Americans.

“One problem I’ve had today is keeping my Wongs straight,” Reid said with a chamber officer, Terry Wong, standing by his side. It was Reid’s take off from the often-quoted racist remark, “Two Wongs don’t make a Right.”

Earlier in his speech, Reid also admonished his predominantly Asian American audience by saying, “I don’t think you’re smarter than anybody else, but you’ve convinced a lot of us you are.”

Very few of the mainstream media and Asian American advocacy groups called him out on his remarks, but realizing he had offended many Asian Americans, Reid issued this apology:

“I realize I may have offended a lot of people with my remarks.  I should have known better.  I now realize I’m no smarter than Asian Americans.  In fact, I’m no smarter than a 5th grader.” (It was a take off from the popular TV show)

U.S. CONGRESS JOINS THE CORPORATE EXODUS, WILL MOVE TO SWITZERLAND

imageWashington, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles) – The United States Congress is the latest American Institution to announce that it is moving its headquarters abroad.

The announcement came just hours after the fastfood giant Burger King said it was moving its corporate headquarters to Canada. BK joins the growing list of American companies exiting the U.S. while maintaining business operations in the country — all for the sake of paying less taxes and employing cheaper labor.

Congress will move the Capitol to Switzerland.

Speaker John Boehner said the move will free senators and congressmen from public scrutiny, media criticism and lobbying while allowing the honorable men and women of Congress to do some serious work.  The current Congress has earned the reputation as a “do-nothing” Congress.

Legislative aides, interns and contractual personnel were all excited after hearing the news of their transfer to Switzerland. “I love Swiss cheese and chocolates,” exclaimed an aide to Representative Michele Bachmann. “Wow, now I can finally realize my long-time dream of going to work in kilts,” said another.

There is, however, one group that is not happy about the move – the Capitol police. Boehner disclosed that the new U.S. Congress building which will be overlooking the Swiss Alps, will be employing Swiss guards.

PROPOSED BILL TO REPLACE ADOBO WITH LECHON AS THE PHILIPPINES’ NATIONAL DISH

Cebu Ayers Lechon Order Online Manila Shipping ContactManila, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Senator Nancy Binay, daughter of Vice President Jejomar Binay, has filed a new bill that would make lechon (roasted pig) the official national dish of the Philippines.

Until recently, the “unofficial’ national dish was the adobo.

Senator Nancy Binay

In filing the new bill, Binay said that the main reason she wanted to replace adobo  with lechon was to memorialize Congress’ pork barrel which many believe will soon  be extinct. A major signature campaign has been initiated by Filipino grassroots groups asking Congress to permanently abolish pork barrel.

“Making lechon the national dish will be a constant reminder to all Filipinos of the many ghost projects that have been successfully funded through the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF). PDAF, also known as pork barrel funds, is the appropriation of government spending for localized projects secured primarily to bring money to a Congressional district.

Earlier this year, a 10 Billion-peso pork barrel scam rocked Congress and the nation, leading to indictments and the arrest of business persons and politicians who allegedly pocketed taxpayer funds intended for non-existent projects and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs).

While the chicken industry is totally opposed to the new bill, the country’s swine producers are throwing their full support for the measure.  As a compromise, the chicken raisers are proposing that  lechon  and chicken adobo be designated as “co-national dish.”

Binay is scheduled to convene a townhall meeting next week to hear the pros and cons of her measure.
