ANTI-GAY GROUP CALLS FOR A BOYCOTT OF COCA-COLA

imageWashington, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles) – The Christian fundamentalist group American Family Association (AFA) has again reared it ugly anti-gay head by calling for a boycott of Coca-Cola.

Earlier the group urged its members not to accept mail that is postmarked with the Harvey Milk stamp, saying that the late first openly-gay elected politician fom San Francisco does not deserve to be memorialized in a postage stamp.image

Today, the AFA called on its members and the consuming public to stop buying Coke products, or if they absolutely need to drink soda, to buy Pepsi instead.

It’s all about Coke’s extremely popular summer marketing campaign in which coke bottles are personalized with common names of people like Jane, Chris or Paul.

Well, it has come to the attention of AFA that Coca-Cola has been producing a lot of coke bottles with the names Adam and Steve.  Placed side by side, these two bottles become an affront to the biblical characters Adam and Eve. “We’ve always maintained that God created man and woman, Adam and Eve, not man and man, Adam and Steve,” an AFA spokesperson said.

Coca-Cola has not returned calls from The Adobo Chronicles seeking comment on the boycott.

SAN FRANCISCO LATINO GROUP WANTS TO CHANGE THE NAME OF CASTRO STREET

Gómez

San Francisco, California (The Adobo Chronicles) – Openly-lesbian Latina comedian Marga Gómez is one happy camper these days. Last week, she spearheaded a protest against the owners of a new Mexican restaurant in the Castro named Bandidos. Her group claimed that the name is offensive to Mexicans and Mexican Americans. It is a Spanish term for “outlaw” or “criminal.” Gómez, who is of Puerto Rican and Cuban heritage, demanded that the owners change the name of the restaurant. Today, the owners announced they were changing the name to Hecho, a Spanish term that means “made,” as in “made in the U.S.A.”

Feeling energized by her ‘victory,’ Gómez has started a new petition and protest. This time she wants the City and County of San Francisco to change the name of Castro Street.  Nevermind that the street was named after Jose Castro,  leader of Mexican opposition to U.S. rule in the 19th century. “The name has nothing to do with the LGBT community,” Gómez said.

Speaking to local media today, including The Adobo Chronicles, Gómez admitted that the real reason for her protest is that the street name reminds her of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. “As a Cuban American, and as a lesbian, I want a steet name that is more reflective of my sexual, political and racial identity,” she said. “I am no fan of Fidel.”

Gómez said she plans to meet with County Supervisor Scott Wiener who represents the 8th district which includes the Castro. She also plans to do a one-woman show at the Castro Theatre next month to help raise funds to finance the name change petition.

REPUBLICANS EQUATE HOMOSEXUALITY WITH ALCOHOL, CIGARETTES AND GAMBLING

Pittenger

Charlotte, North Carolina (The Adobo Chronicles) – First, Texas Governor Rick Perry compared being gay to alcolohism, telling a San Francisco audience last June that one can choose to stay away from both.

Then, North Carolina Republican Congressman Robert Pittenger said in Charlotte that lighting up a cigarette is a lot  like firing someone for being gay — everyone ahould be able to do it.

Finally, to complete the vice trilogy, Minnesotta Representative Michele Bachmann told  a senior citizen audience in Minneapolis today that homosexuality is no different from gambling. “You win some, you lose some. But mostly you lose ” she said, refusing to elaborate on what she meant by her statement.

Now the Republican assault on homosexuality is complete. However, as an unintended consequence, tobacco, alcohol and gaming companies have all announced that they were pulling all future campaign contributions to Republican candidates. They also said they will release a master list of Republican candidates who have received campaign funds from them since elections were invented.
