ADOBO CHRONICLES’ PERSON OF THE YEAR: MIAA GENERAL MANAGER JOSE ANGEL HONRADO

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Each year, The Adobo Chronicles names its Person of the Year, choosing from among candidates who have made a significant impact on news and social media by grabbing the headlines for heroic deeds and statements relating to national or international events.

In 2013, we named Hollywood actor Jackie Chan, who has repeatedly survived news about his untimely demise. Last year, we named former Philippine Interior Secretary and now presidential candidate Mar Roxas for being the “man for the masses.”

For 2015, we were very conflicted.

Our short list included President Aquino, for being in a constant bubble, always proclaiming that the Philippines is the “new darling of Asia,” while ignoring the many ills and perils that the Filipino people continue to endure.

We also considered his sister, television host Kris Aquino, whose penchant for blabbering has made her the ‘queen of gossip,” oftentimes washing her dirty laundry — especially her private and family life — in public.

Transportation Secretary Joseph Abaya was also on our list for the unending woes of Metro Manila’s nightmarish traffic and the beleaguered MRT (light railway) and for proclaiming that these problems “were not fatal.”

But after serious deliberations, our editors have finally made a unanimous choice: Jose Angel Honrado, general manager of the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA), under whose watch the now internationally-famous laglag bala became a trademark of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

Laglag bala was an airport scheme in which scrupulous airport personnel “planted” live bullets in bags and luggage of unsuspecting airline passengers for the purpose of extorting money.

The scheme caused the cancellation of international gatherings, business meetings, family reunions by overseas Filipino workers (OFW), and the proliferation of a new cottage industry: plastic wrapping of checked-in luggage at NAIA.

Even President Barack Obama was advised by ther U.S. State Department to wrap his briefcase in plastic upon arriving in Manila for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit meeting last month.

It has also been reported that a Philippine Airlines flight from Honolulu left for Manila with no passengers, only the crew, because confirmed travelers refused to board the plane for fear of being victimized by the scheme once they landed in Manila.

But what made the editors truly convinced about bestowing this 2015 honor to Honrado was his testimony before a Senate hearing in which he told Senator Bongbong Marcos that he had no control over what happens at the airport, essentially confirming that he is being paid as general manager to do absolutely nothing.

Congratulations to our 2015 Person of the Year!

FREE FLIP FLOPS FOR EVERY MAR ROXAS SUPPORTER

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – It’s been said many times that behind every man’s success is a woman. Well, that is certainly true in history as it is in contemporary politics.

In the Philippines, Imelda Marcos is widely acknowledged as the inspiration (or force) that spelled the late President Ferdinand Marcos’ success and staying power.

It’s 2015, and there’s a new batch of Filipino women that are the driving force behind their husband’s political careers. At least one woman that we know of: broadcaster Korina Sanchez, a.k.a., Mrs. Mar Roxas.

Even before Roxas declared his candidacy for president of the Philippines, Sanchez has been a staunch supporter and defender of her husband. Many will recall that she came to the defense of Roxas when CNN’s Anderson Cooper criticized the slow response of the Aquino government (and, by extension, the Department of Interior and Local Government of which Roxas was secretary)  to the plight of the victims of typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda).

Political strategists had warned that  Sanchez’ penchant for making frequent controversial public statements (like when she said on the air that she hoped an impending typhoon that was about to approach the Philippines would veer towards Japan instead) could be detrimental to her husband’s candidacy.  So against her will, she has been staying quietly in the background while her husband did all the talking and campaigning.

But now that her husband’s standing in the polls is not looking very good, Sanchez is again stepping up  — in a very public way — to help her husband secure the votes he needs to become the next Philippine president.

Sanchez has just launched “Tsinelas mula kay Roxas,” (flip flops from Roxas), a nation-wide campaign in which Sanchez will hand out a pair of her infamous slippers or flip flops to every Filipino voter who would pledge to vote for her husband.

So voters, get them now while supplies last!

PRESIDENT AQUINO REPRIMANDS SISTER KRIS: ‘STOP HUMILIATING ME!’

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Television host and actress Kris Aquino just can’t keep her mouth shut.  Even her brother NoyNoy, president of the Philippines, has had it with her.

Kris’ latest public comment about her brother was that newly-crowned Miss Universe Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach ‘didn’t like Noy.’

Shortly after being crowned Miss Philippines-Universe earlier in the year, Kris invited Wurtzbach to her television show and tried to pin her down about the rumored ‘date’ between her and her brother.

“Are you dating my brother?” Kris asked, to which Wurtzbach diplomatically evaded giving a direct answer. Then Kris promised that she would be a nice “sister-in-law” to the beauty queen.

Fast forward to December, 2015.  Wurtzbach won the much-coveted Miss Universe title. Naturally, the gossip circles started re-visiting the supposed “romance” between the president and Wurtzbach.

The president himself refused to give any comment about the new Miss Universe.  But Kris, being Kris, had to bring up the issue (or non-issue) about her brother and Wurtzbach, finally admitting that the beauty queen does not like her brother.

Today, inside sources at Malacanang Palace, told The Adobo Chronicles that an angry and visibly annoyed President Aquino called his sister as she was about to go on the air for her TV show.

The president reportedly screamed at his sister and said that she needs to stop humiliating him. “For once, can you just shut up and mind your own show business,” the president was quoted saying to Kris.
