Committee Chair Senator Grace Poe announced that she and her colleagues have come to this conclusion after resource persons invited to testify at the hearings presented uncontestable evidence to prove that the two news sources are perfect examples of fake news.

Among the evidence provided to the Senate committee included Inquirer’s ‘killing’ of Indonesian death row inmate, Filipina Mary Jane Veloso who was convicted of drug charges.  Inquirer reported that she was executed, but Veloso remains alive to this day.

Also presented was Rappler’s Pia Ranada’s report that President Duterte had appointed Nikki Prieto-Teodoro as the new DSWD Secretary to replace Judy Taguiwalo whose appointment was rejected by Congress.

In her concluding statement, Poe thanked the resource persons for their truthfulness and courage in helping the committee get to the bottom of fake news on social and mainstream media.

All’s well that ends well.

Senator Grace Poe Walks Out Of Committee Hearing On Fake News

B3EDAA17-621E-47B1-85F6-D39FBBE298CF.jpegMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Every Tom, Dick and Harry had already testified before Senator Grace Poe’s Senate committee investigating the proliferation of fake news on social media: Secretary Martin Andanar, Asec Mocha Uson, Thinking Pinoy, Jover Laurio, Maria Ressa, Ellen Tordesillas, and officials from Facebook and Google.  Yet, after the third hearing today, the committee has failed to come up with a definition of ‘fake news.’

Resource person after resource person either refused  or was hesitant to define fake news, or evaded the question altogether.

This has been a source of frustration for Poe, as she felt that all her efforts to  shed light on this hot and controversial issue have not gone anywhere.

So today, in a display of extreme disappointment and perhaps embarassment, Poe walked out of her own Senate hearing.

Will she be Senator Leila De Lima’s successor as the Walkout Queen of the Senate?

Rappler Senior Managers Revolt Against CEO Maria Ressa

E17C13E0-883B-4E44-BAC0-7719F8AAFF2FMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – It’s the best news one could ever receive: that someone just gave you P5 Million pesos.

That’s exactly what happened to 14 of Rappler’s senior managers who received the news that the online news source’s foreign investor, Omidyar Network, is donating its P78 Million investment to them – equally.

But there is one problem: Omidyar’s investment has long been gone.  Rappler has failed financially and has used up all the investment money.

That’s very depressing for Rappler’s 13 senior managers (Ressa is the 14th).  So they are planning to stage a protest rally tomorrow in front of Rappler’s officers to demand an accounting of funds — local and foreign.

More trouble for an already-troubled Rappler.
