The Rainbowization Of San Francisco’s Gay Castro Street

image.jpegSAN FRANCISCO, California (The Adobo Chronicles, San Francisco Bureau) – As if the giant rainbow flag at San Francisco’s Market and Castro streets were not enough to let people know they are in the gayest district of the City by the Bay, the area’s pedestrian lanes were also painted ROYGBV  (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet).

But wait, that wasn’t quite enough either.  Today, the city unveiled the rainbow-colored lights lining the escalators leading to and from the Castro Street MUNI train station.

Just one more thing, and we’re all set.  What can we do to the famous MUNI F Line that begins and ends at Castro?

Aha! Don’t give Scott Wiener any ideas.

Wiener, who represents the Castro on the SF Board of Supervisors told The Adobo Chronicles  that on Monday, he will file a board resolution that would order MUNI to paint all of its trains on the F Line with the colors of the rainbow and decorate them with — what else — rainbow banners. He said that doing so will result in more tourist visits to the area and ultimately benefit the Castro Street businesses — at least those that continue to be open and afford the skyrocketing rent.

LGBT advocates, or anyone opposing the proposed measure are advised to show up at City Hall on Monday when the Board of Supes take up Wiener’s proposal.

Alabama City Passes Transgender Bathroom Law To Solve Unemployment

image.jpegOxford, Alabama (The Adobo Chronicles, Washington Bureau) – A small Alabama city has passed an ordinance making it illegal for transgender people to use public restrooms that don’t correspond to the biological sex listed on their birth certificate.

Oxford Council President Steven Waits said the ordinance, passed Tuesday, is in response to Target’s new restroom policy. The retail giant announced last week that it will allow transgender people to use its restrooms corresponding to the gender with which they identify. Target has one store in Oxford.

Violations would be considered as a misdemeanor in Oxford, according to reports, with penalties ranging from a $500 fine to six months in jail.

The Oxford law follows weeks of controversy over a law in North Carolina mandating that transgender people use public restrooms that correspond with their biological sex at birth.

When queried by The Adobo Chronicles  on the potential impact of the new law on Oxford’s economy, Waits said that it will essentially bring the city’s unemployment rate from 7% to 0%. Oxford’s current unemployment is higher than the national unemployment rate in the entire U.S.

“With the new law, all government buildings and private businesses will have to employ new security personnel to guard their bathrooms to make sure they are used correctly, gender-wise. Think of all the unemployed people in Oxford who will find jobs as a result,” Waits said.

When the new law takes into full effect, public bathrooms users must be always ready to show their birth certificate to the security guards before being allowed inside.

LONDON, United Kingdom (The Adobo Chronicles, Berlin Bureau) – As she celebrated her 90th birthday, Queen Elizabeth had a message to Great Britain’s LGBT community: don’t travel to the U.S.A.

The gay-friendly queen mother was reportedly pissed at the growing anti-LGBT sentiment in America, particularly in two states which recently passed discriminatory legislation against those who pledge allegiance to the rainbow flag.

But it was not only the Royal Palace that cautioned lesbian, gay, bisexual and transagender citizens about travel to America.  The British Foreign Office also issued — for the first time — a travel advisory specifically addressed to the LGBT community. It warned travelers to be aware of controversial new laws in North Carolina and Mississippi before visiting the United States.

imageAlthough the advisory was directed at North Carolina and Mississippi, organizers of Pride celebrations across the U.S. — from  San Francisco to New York — are weary that there will be less attendance in their respective celeberations this June.

Moral of the story: you can piss off the Prime Minister, but you’d better not piss off the Queen!
