Congressional Democrats Sit Down, Republicans Stand Up, On Gun Control

Stars and stripes on gun

WASHINGTON, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles, Washington Bureau) – For more than 24 hours, Democrats led by Representative John Lewis (D-Georgia), staged a sit-in on the floor of Congress to demand action on sensible gun legislation.  The protest follows the recent shooting at an Orlando gay bar, killing 49 people and injuring scores of others.

House Democrats were looking for votes to expand background checks and ban gun sales to those on the no-fly watch list.

For their part, House Republicans stood up as Speaker Paul Ryan declared a recess that will last through July 5.

As they were leaving the chamber, many GOP representatives said they were so looking forward to return to their respective constituent areas to participate in fireworks in connection with Monday’s Fourth of July celebration.

Indeed, the balance of power in Congress is one to behold.  Let’s just call it “firepower,’ courtesy of the National Rifle Association (NRA).

A new Congressional meme has emerged: “You either sit with us, or stand with us.”

Meanwhile, The Adobo Chronicles can now confirm that there is no truth to the rumor that the NRA is providing each Republican member of Congress with a limited-edition hand gun that bears the image of the American flag as a “gift” to commemorate this year’s Independence Day.

Manila Archbishop Thinks President Aquino Is No Longer President

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – The head of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), Archbishop Socrates Villegas, apparently thinks that NoyNoy Aquino is no longer president.

In a pastoral letter issued over the weekend, Villegas expressed concern over the increasing number of vigilante-style killings of drug dealers that some have attributed to Davao City Mayor Rod Duterte.

Villegas was reacting to reports from the Philippine National Police (PNP) that there had been 40 drug suspects killed since Duterte won the presidential elections on May 9, compared to 39 recorded in the four months before it

The CBCP has been vocal in criticizing Duterte for his alleged extra-judicial governance, especially with regards to criminals and drug lords.

Villegas must have forgotten that Aquino, not Duterte, is president at least until June 30. His criticism seems to have been misdirected, and that’s what happens when the Catholic Church sticks its finger in affairs of the state.

GOP Senators Unanimously Help Pass New Gun Bill

image.jpegWASHINGTON, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles, Washington, D.C.) – Despite their successful efforts on Monday to vote down four gun safety regulations introduced in the aftermath of the Orlando gay bar shooting, Senate Republicans have proven that they are capable of passing   a comprehensive gun legislation even without intervention from the National Rifle Assocation (NRA).

In an unprecedented vote late Monday night, Senate Republicans managed to unanimously pass a new bill that practically ends all debate on gun safety.

Fifty four GOP senators voted in favor of a proposal drafted by Republican leaders re-classifying assault weapons as hunting rifles.

Senator Ted Cruz who was among the proponents of the new law said that the re-classification should satisfy the clamor of concerned Americans to outlaw weapons of mass shooting and thereby prevent future tragedies such as those in Orlando and Sandy Hook.

This is the first time in the history of the U.S. Senate where 100% of GOP senators took a stand to ensure the safety of all Americans and protect them from any form of gun violence resulting from assault and similar weapons.
