SANTA CLARA, California (The Adobo Chronicles) – The countdown has begun for Super Bowl 50 which will be held at the Levi’s Stadium on Sunday, February 7.

Preparations are at fever-pitch — in San Francisco!

No, that wasn’t a typo.

Yes, the Levi’s Stadium is located in the City of Santa Clara, but The City by the Bay is hugging all the spotlight for this monumental sports event.

San Francisco is holding its own Super Bowl.  In fact, it has transformed a wide patch of the city into what it calls “Super Bowl City.” There will be concerts, game viewing, street parties, vendor extravaganza, and what have you.

This has prompted the City of Santa Clara to file a law suit in district court seeking damages to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars for lost revenue and media attention.

Santa Clara City Manager Julio Fuentes told The Adobo Chronicles that San Francisco was malicious in stealing the limelight from Santa Clara and that it has robbed the city government as well as local businesses of potential revenue expected from the influx of football fans.

“I’ve encountered many people who thought that the 50th edition of the game was being held in San Francisco,” Fuentes said, adding that “it is only fair that San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and his cohorts be made to pay for their misdeed. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the City of Santa Clara, and San Francisco robbed us of the glory.”

Manila’s NAIA Wants To Regain Its Title As World’s Worst Airport

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – From 2011 to 2013, Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) topped the list of the world’s worst airports as compiled by an international travel website. Now, NAIA is desperate to regain that title and is doing all it can to make it happen.

Late last year, NAIA made headlines because of laglag bala (bullet drop), a scheme in which unscrupulous airport personnel plant live bullets into the luggage and bags of unsuspecting passengers for the purpose of extorting money.

The latest scheme, as reported by The Inquirer, is called laglag kisame (ceiling drop) in which portions of the airport’s passenger terminal ceiling collapse without warning.

The latest incident involved the collapse of a portion of the ceiling of a restaurant inside Terminal 3, causing injury to an American passenger, Day Adam Warner.

Similar mishaps happened inTerminal 2 in December 2012, where a Hong Kong-bound passenger was injured; and inTerminal 1 in February 2014. In addition, many passengers  have complained of leaking ceilings, collapsed floors, malfunctioning equipment, congestion, dilapidated facilities, rude or corrupt personnel and several airport taxi scams.

Following the latest incident, the U.S. State Department has issued a travel advisory asking American citizens flying in or out of NAIA to wear protective hard hats to ensure their safety while inside the airport terminal.

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) –  The Philippine Inquirer is reporting that presidential candidate Rodrigo Duterte is planning to visit The Vatican to ask Pope Francis for forgiveness.

The foul-mouthed mayor of Davao City, whose statements are punctuated by expletives, recently cursed Francis for creating a huge traffic jam during the Pontiff’s visit to Manila last year.  He has since regretted the unacceptable behaviour.

Upon learning of Duterte’s planned visit to The Vatican, Pope Francis posted the following message on his Facebook page:

“OMG, Duterte is coming to The Vatican! By the grace of God, he has finally come to his senses. I will be happy to give him a private audience, but I have long forgiven him for his nasty comments about me.”

Duterte is currently ranked No. 1 among the 5 major presidential candidates.  His visit to The Vatican will surely endear him to the millions of Filipino Catholic voters and could ensure his victory in the forthcoming elections in May.
