MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – It’s that time of the year again when the Philippines chooses its representatives to various international beauty pageants.
As one can imagine, there is so much excitement following recent victories by Filipinas in bringing home prestigious titles like Miss Universe, Miss World and Miss International, among many others.
One of the major Philippine pageants is the ‘Mutya Ng Pilipinas’ which currently holds franchises to international contests like Miss Asia Pacific International, Miss Tourism International, Miss Tourism Queen of trhe Year International, Top Model of the World and Miss Tourism Planet.
However, ‘Mutya Ng Pilipinas’ faces charges of discrimination because of its screening process and candidate requirements. Among other qualifications to sign up as a pageant contestant, the applicant must be “a natural-born female.”
Many believe that this requirement discriminates against females who were born in the Cesarean or C-Section. “Why limit the contest only to those born through natural delivery,” they ask. “What’s important is that they are of Philippine heritage and can represent the true beauty of the Filipina.”
The Adobo Chronicles tried to reach pageant organizers for comment but they have not returned our calls.
