MEXICO CITY, Mexico (The Adobo Chronicles, San Francisco Bureau) – Under a Trump administration, the United States government will look to cancel the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), but it will also prompt the Mexican government to review and possibly cancel 75 bilateral agreements between the two countries.
Mexican Senato Armando Rios Piter is already laying the groundwork in preparation for the election of Trump as the next U.S. president.
The first of these bilateral agreements that will be reviewed and possibly cancelled is the 1849 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican-American war and resulted in the U.S. acquiring the states of Texas and California, as well as large parts of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming.
At today’s session of the Mexican Senate, Rios Piter unveiled a revised map of the United States that reflects the re-acquisition by Mexico of the Western states included in the 1849 treaty.
The Trump campaign has not issued a statement regarding Rios Piter’s proposal except to say that it will have to revise its blueprint for the great wall to adjust to the new U.S.-Mexico border.
