Asian Americans, Free Speech Advocates Protest ABC’s Revival Of ‘The Gong Show’

IMG_6068.JPGHOLLYWOOD, California (The Adobo Chronicles, Los Angeles Bureau) – Asian American community leaders have joined First Amendment advocates in protesting ABC Network’s announcement that it will revive the 197o’s ‘The Gong Show.’

Created and produced by Chuck Barris, ‘The Gong Show’ was known for its free-wheeling style, absurdist humor, and the titular gong used by the judges to cut short bad auditions.

ABC has given a 10-episode order for this new version of the irreverent talent show competition, which is being executive produced by Will Arnett.

A gong is an African, East and South East Asian musical percussion instrument that takes the form of a flat, circular metal disc which is hit with a mallet. It has its origins in China and it spread to the rest of Southeast Asia, including many sacred Temples in the region.

It is therefore not surprising that Asian Americans are not happy with the objectification of the gong, calling it racist and offensive.

Free speech advocates, on the other hand, say that the concept of the show violates the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution which guarantees the freedom of speech. “No matter how bad a speech (or act) is, no one has the right to silence the speaker or actor by hitting a gong,” they said.

This is the second network controversy in just the past week.  Earlier, NBC cancelled a new show, “Mail Order Family,” after Asian Americans and women’s groups protested the perpetuation of racist and misogynist stereotypes.  The show was supposed to be about an American widower who takes a Filipina mail-order bride to help raise his two kids.

Coca-Cola Says Its Soda Pop Is Nothing But Rebottled Pepsi

IMG_6055.PNGATLANTA, Georgia (The Adobo Chronicles, Miami Bureau) – You’re either a Pepsi person or a Coke person.

The stiff competition between the two soft drink giants has been going on for ages and they have amassed their respective loyal fans who constantly root for their preferred soda pop.

So when Pepsico recently admitted that Aquafina, the bottled water it has been marketing contains nothing but tap water, Coke fans rejoiced and claimed victory.

But not so fast.

Today, Coca-Cola, under extreme pressure from Freedom of Information (FOI) advocates, admitted that its carbonated soda is nothing  but rebottled Pepsi.

Is it any wonder that in taste test after taste test, soft drink consumers can’t tell the difference between Coke and Pepsi?

So, what’s next?

Consumer advocates are now pursuing an investigation on rumors that Colgate toothpaste is the same as Crest toothpaste. Just a different marketing label.

Long live capitalism!

Donald Trump Finally Acknowledges That Actor Bruce Lee Was A U.S. Citizen

img_6031SAN FRANCISCO, California (The Adobo Chronicles, San Francisco Bureau) – It wasn’t only Barack Obama that Donald Trump accused of being a non natural-born U.S. citizen.  The Republican presidential candidate’s birther movement extended beyond politics.  It included Hollywood.

After eight years insisting that Obama wasn’t eligible to become president of the United States, Trump finally accepted last month that the Hawaii-born occupant of the White House was, indeed a natural-born U.S. citizen.

But Trump also doubted that Hollywood actor and martial arts icon Bruce Lee was born in America. He always considered that Lee, who died in 1973,  was Chinese. He frequently asked:  “How can anyone named Lee be American? And a karate expert at that?”

img_6030Well, today, after Lee’s estate showed Trump a certified true copy of a birth certificate, the GOP candidate finally acknowledged that the actor was indeed a U.S. citizen, born in San Francisco.

Now that he’s done with birther issues, Trump is now focusing on tax issues that have derailed his presidential campaign.
