MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Department of Health Secretary Francisco Duque may have something that could redeem his tarnished reputation resulting from the PhilHealth mess. (A Senate committee report has recommended that criminal charges be filed against Duque and others for alleged graft and corruption.)

Today, Duque, who co-chairs the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) on Emerging Infectious Diseases, announced that the Philippines, under his able leadership, has fattened the curve after almost six months of lockdowns in connection with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaking with The Adobo Chronicles, Duque said that the foresight and continued efforts to impose various levels of community quarantine has resulted in Filipinos gaining weight because of the lack of exercise, mobility and nutritious food.

“Weighing scale numbers and BMIs (Body Mass Index) have shot off the roof,” the Secretary said, adding that “this only shows that the government has done the right thing to combat the coronavirus.

In the latest Senate hearing, Duque told the legislators that the reason he was unable to monitor the financial mess at PhilHealth was because he was very busy with his tasks at DOH and the IATF.

”I hope that with this fattening of the curve” I will be exonerate me from the allegations lodged against me regarding PhilHealth,” Duque said.

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) –President Rodrigo Duterte on Friday expressed hope that the late senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr.’s life would inspire Filipinos to live with “courage and patriotism.”

Duterte made the statement as he joined the nation in commemorating Aquino’s 37th death anniversary.
Reacting to the statement, former President NoyNoy Aquino thanked  Duterte for his kind words and made a comeback at Ninoy’s critics, saying:
”See what I’ve been saying all along? My dad was a patriot and courageous man.  Even Duterte says so.”
Meanwhile, The Adobo Chronicles just learned that Opposition Senators Risa  Hontiveros and Franklin Drilon have filed a resolution urging the government to transfer Ninoy’s remains to the Libingan ng mga Bayani, next to the remains of his nemesis, President Ferdinand E. Marcos.
We heal as one.

Deportation Looms For Chinese Nationals In Manila, Filipinos in Daly City, California

DALY CITY, California (The Adobo Chronicles, Daly City Bureau) – Manila Mayor Isko Moreno wants Chinese Nationals  deported for calling his city a  “Province of China.”

Meanwhile, across the Pacific in the United States, Mayor Glenn Sylvester also wants Filipinos and Filipino Americans deported for calling Daly City  “Little Manila.”

Critics of the Philippine government’s pro-China stance have used the “Province of China”  meme in their protest activities.

Daly City in Northern California  has been referred to as “Little Manila” because of its huge Filipino population.

Moral of the story: Do not rename cities or countries lest you suffer dire consequences!
