MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – The National ID Law is headed for approval in Congress, but the fight is not yet over.
Congresswoman Geraldine Roman (1st District, Bataan), the first openly transgender woman elected to the Philippine Congress, has introduced an amendment to the Bill that would mandate the inclusion of sexual orientation on the the ID.
Speaking to The Adobo Chronicles, Roman said, “If we’re going to have a national ID, it should contain all the pertinent information about the individual, and that includes sexual orientation, para wala nang tanong tanong. (No questions asked.)
MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – When it comes to grassroots activism, nothing beats #hashtags campaigns in the Philippines.
It all began with #BabaeAko, a campaign launched to critize President Rodrigo Duterte’s alleged misogyny. No less than former Social Welfare Secretary Judy Taguiwalo is part of this campaign.
Well, move over #BabaeAko, several new #hashtag campaigns are flooding the Philippines’ social media. Here are some of them:
#BabaeAko #SiguradoKa? – A counter campaign to the #BabaeAko hashtag
#BaklaAko – A campaign launched by the Kapisanan ng mga Beki sa Pilipinas (KBP) to counter homophobia
#NaanoLangAko – A campaign by single moms, in obvious reference to a comment made by (now) Senate President Tito Sotto during the confirmation hearing of Taguiwalo
#PedophileAko – A campaign by victims of sexual abuse by Catholic bishops and priests
#MagandaAko – A campaign launched by followers of Maria Ressa, Jover Laurio and RaissaRobles
Who knows what other #hashtag campaigns will follow suit?
MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Philippine women’s groups led by GABRIELA are finalizing plans for a huge protest rally — involving 30,000 — on March 8, International Women’s Day.
The mass action is aimed at calling attention to what they say is the dictatorial regime of President Rodrigo Duterte. The women are also staging the rally in support of embattled Chief Justice Lourdes Sereno who is facing an impeachment complaint in Congress.
The Adobo Chronicles caught up with Sister Mary John Mananzan of the Movement Against Tyrrany, one of the protesting groups, and we asked her for the truth in as far as the expected attendance at the rally is concerned.
As a messenger and servant of God, Sister Mananzan could not lie and she told us the real score.
She said the 30K that they promised refers to 30 kilos of Jollibee Chicken Joy that they have ordered to feed whoever attends their rally.
