Final Answer: President Aquino Says He Went To Sleep After Learning About The Kidapawan Massacre

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – In the United States, the president has to wake up to answer a 3 a.m. call if there is a crisis.  In the Philippines, the president goes to sleep.

For over a week, Philippine President Noynoy Aquino chose to remain silent on the April 1 Kidapawan massacre which killed and injured farmers who staged a peaceful protest to ask for rice to feed their families who had nothing to eat because of the El Niño effect on crops in Mindanao.

Today, finally, Aquino talked about the massacre and why he has not said a word about this unfortunate incident.

(You know really, my job is 24/7, 365 days and once in a while, my body complains.  On Friday night (on the day of the massacre), I came down with the flu all of a sudden.  I was having chills, had a sweater on, fully wrapped, no airconditioning, no electric fan, I tried hard to sleep and the next morning I had more problems  involving my stomach, so the doctor advised me to rest even for just a short period.)

Responding to a question from The Adobo Chronicles on why it took Aquino more than a week to make a statement about the incident, the president said that his press secretary and staff were on a week-long annual holiday in a beach resort in Palawan so no one could help him write a good excuse for not immediately responding to the massacre. He added: “It was only this morning that my press secretary reported back for work, but I think he did a good job in coming up with a good reason for my one-week silence, don’t you think?”

Move Over, McDonald’s, It’s Burger King Versus Jollibee

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – The rivalry between America’s McDonald’s and the Philippines’ Jollibee has finally come to an end.  The popular Filipino fastfood chain has taken on a new rival, challenging the next best thing to McDonalds — Burger King.

On March 31, Burger King is launching its newest  menu item it is calling the “angriest burger,” featuring a red bun.  Apparently an earlier black version of its hamburger ban didn’t quite click with its customers.

Not to be outdone, Jollibee has announced that on April 1, it will launch its answer to the angriest burger — the bloodiest siopao.

Siopao, or stuffed steamed bun, is the Asian version of the American hamburger bun.

The brewing competition between Burger King and Jollibee is based on which bun is redder. Or angrier. Or bloodier.

In Support Of Moms Breastfeeding In Public, Hooters Will Go Topless

imageATLANTA, Georgia (The Adobo Chronicles,Washington Bureau) – Forty-seven states, DC and the Virgin Islands have laws that specifically allow moms to breastfeed in any public or private location. Two of the remaining states — South Dakota and Virginia — exempt breastfeeding moms from public indecency or nudity laws, and Idaho is the only state that has yet to pass any similar laws.

Despite these laws, we often hear about  stories of moms who are given a hard time for breastfeeding in public, often asked to cover up or leave restaurants, malls, even churches because they’re nursing.

In support of moms breastfeeding in public, the American restaurant chain  Hooters has announced that it will go ‘topless.’

Hooters, Inc. is the trade name of two privately held American restaurant chains: Hooters of America, Incorporated, based in Atlanta, Georgia, and Hooters, Incorporated, based in Clearwater, Florida. The Hooters name is a double entendre referring to both its owl logo, a bird known for its “hooting” calls, and an American slang term for human breasts popularized by comedian Steve Martin on the hit comedy series Saturday Night Live.

Hooters is a restaurant whose wait staff are primarily attractive young women, usually referred to simply as “Hooter Girls”, whose revealing outfits and sex appeal are played up and are a primary component of the company’s image.

Beginning August 1, which happens to be the start of breastfeeding awareness month in the U.S., Hooters’ wait staff will go completely topless. Consequently, all 460 plus Hooters locations and franchises will be off limits to customers who are under 21 years old.

“Breastfeeding is not only a healthy practice with tremendous nutritional benefits to babies; it’s also nothing to be ashamed about or ridiculed in private or in public,” a statement from the Hooters Atlanta headquarters said.

Moms interviewed by The Adobo Chronicles expressed overwhelming approval for the Hooters move.

As for the dads?  One reaction from a 48-year-old father of three kids, including a 6-month-old baby: “I can’t wait!”
