Duterte Imposes Sanction On U.S. Imports Of Philippine Soy Sauce And Vinegar

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – If Donald Trump heeds the urging of the U.S. Senate, Philippine officials and others involved in the supposed unlawful detention of Senator Leila de Lima, will be banned from entering the U.S.

But President Duterte made the first counter move by banning the entry into the Philippines of three Democrat Senators who authored and supported the resolution urging the ban on the Filipinos — Senators Patrick Leahy, Dick Durbin and Edward Markey.

Today, Duterte announced that if such a ban on Filipinos is pursued and implemented by the U.S. State Department, he will impose a devastating sanction on America, by banning U.S. imports of Philippine soy sauce and vinegar.

Soy sauce and vinegar, especially the famous Marca Piña brand, are key ingredients in preparing the world-famous adobo dish, loved not just by Filipinos living abroad but even gourmet chefs in the U.S.

The Philippine Presidential Palace said that banning U.S. imports of soy sauce and vinegar will have a devastating effect on the estimated 4 million Filipinos now living in America — many of whom work in key professions and services like health care, music, engineering, hospitality and technology.

”It will also be very disappointing for top chefs in America who are all in agreement that the Filipino adobo is among the world’s best cuisine,” Presidential Spoksperson Salvador Panelo said.

Jollibee Discontinues 1/3 Pounder Burger, Launches 1 Pounder

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Millions of fans of Jollibee’s 1/3 pounder burger expressed deep disappointment upon hearing the news that the popular fastfood chain had discontinued this menu item popularly known as “Champ.”

American competitor McDonald’s celebrated the news with free champagne in all of its Philippine outlets.  Jollibee’s 1/3 pounder all but put McDonald’s quarter pounder to shame.  So now, the American fast food chain can lord it over when it comes to  giant burgers.

But wait. Today, Jollibee announced that it was launching a new menu item that’s bigger, heavier, tastier,  juicier and unprecedented in the burger industry — the one-pounder!

For that one-pounder experience, visit a Jollibee near you.

ASF Aftermath: Crocs Substituted For Pigs For Filipino Lechon

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Crocs and pigs are often used to describe inept and corrupt Filipino legislators, but who knew these animal species would have each other’s back during the Christmas holiday season in the Philippines?

In many Filipino households, the traditional noche buena (Christmas eve feast/dinner) would not be complete without the traditional lechon (roast pig).  Who can resist that crispy skin dipped in special lechon sauce ni Mang Tomas?

But alas, the African Swine Fever (ASF) has had an impact on the supply of pigs in the Philippines, and has prompted many Filipinos to stay away from pork altogether.

For the enterprising and resilient Filipinos, the shortage of lechon this Christmas season has not dampened their spirit.  They have found a new gourmet substitute for the lechon pig: the lechon crocodile.

We wonder though if the croc skin would be as crispy as that of the lechon pig.
