MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Millions of Filipinos are so looking forward to seeing the next Miss Universe pageant held in their country. That possibility has been floated around, especially because the reigning title holder is Filipina – Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.

If it happens, it will be the third time that the Philippines will play host to this prestigious international beauty contest. It was held in Manila in  1974 and 1994.

But in a recent interview with journalists, President Rodrigo Roa Duterte said that hosting the pageant is not among his priorities and that he will not spend money doing it.

That created a firestorm among millions of Filipinos who consider beauty pageants their Super Bowl and whose love fest with beauty queens is ingrained in their national psyche.

The Adobo Chronicles just learned that a huge protest rally is being planned in front of Malacañang next week to try to convince the president to change his mind.

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Arnell Ignacio. Jimmy Bondoc. Freddie Aguilar. Celebrities all.  And they’re all appointees or potential appointees to top administration posts under President Rod Duterte.

Now, yet another celebrity has been appointed to join the president’s cabinet — none other than reigning Miss Universe Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.

Duterte announced Wurtzbach’s appointment shortly after the Filipina beauty took a selfie with the president during a visit to Malacañang, the presidential palace in Manila.

Wurtzbach will assume the position of secretary of the newly-created Department of Pageant Affairs (DPA).  She will be responsible for coordinating the hundreds, if not thousands of national and local beauty pageants held each year throughout the country, including the major contests that determine the country’s representatives to international pageants like Miss Universe, Miss World and Miss International.

Because of her existing contract with the Miss Universe Organization, Wurtzbach will assume her new cabinet position after she hands the crown to her successor later this year.

Duterte and Wurtzbach also discussed the Philippines’ bid to host the next Miss Universe Pageant in Manila.

Video: Colombia Bans All Beauty Pageants After Crown-Snatching Incident

image.jpegBOGOTÁ, Colombia (The Adobo Chronicles, San Francisco Bureau) – It wasn’t quite a Miss Universe or Steve Harvey moment, but it did involve a Colombian beauty queen and the first runner-up.

A sore loser snatched the crown from the winner and put it on her own head for  a brief photo opportunity that has shocked and angered  beauty pageant-loving Colombians.

In an unprecedented move, the Colombian government announced that effective immediately, it was banning all local and national beauty pageants, calling the televised crown-snatching a “national disgrace.”

The Adobo Chronicles tried to reach Harvey for comment but was unsuccessful. We’ll try again later.
