MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – The Association of Filipino Fashion Designers (AFFD) has announced that its members will boycott all future pageants of the Bb. Pilipinas Charities, franchise holder of Miss Philippines Universe and Miss Philippines International.

The boycott stemmed from what the designers are calling a ‘national disgrace’ following the appearance of Miss Philippines Mary Jean Lastimosa in the National Costume segment of the Miss Universe Pageant in Doral, Florida.

Lastimosa wore a butterfly sleeve gown tattered with red, yellow and purple artificial flowers and a headdress with more of the same. It was designed by Alfredo Barraza of Colombia. Many critics described the gown as a towering wedding cake and a fruity meringue pie filling.

The AFFD accused Barraza of sabotaging the chances of Lastimosa and other past Miss Philippines contestants in winning the pageant crown. It also demanded that the Bb. Pilipinas Charities stop using Barraza and other non-Filipino designers from designing the official wardrobe of Filiipina beauty queens. “We have so many top and talented local designers and yet we keep on having foreigners design the gowns of our beauty queens,” AFFD said in a statement.

Stella Marquez Araneta, founder and head of the Charities could not be immediately reached for comment on the announced boycott.

If the boycott is not resolved, future Miss Philippines contestants may have to source their pageant gowns from local bargain clothing retail stores in Divisoria, a famous flea market district in Manila.

THE REAL STORY BEHIND MISS PHILIPPINES’ NATIONAL COSTUME AT MISS UNIVERSE PAGEANT

DORAL, Florida (The Adobo Chronicles) – Hundreds of Filipinos erupted in cheers and applause each time Miss Philippines appeared on stage as part of the preliminary contest in the Miss Universe Pageant being held in Doral, Florida. They cheered when Mary Jean Lastimosa appeared in her Colombian-designed evening gown, and again when she catwalked her way on stage in a bright pink swim suit.

But when Lastimosa came out in her national costume, the Filipinos in the crowd were stunned silent. The Philippine beauty appeared in a white butterfly sleeve gown with some yellow, red and purple stuff on her hair, sleeves and the bottom of her gown. Obviously, something had gone wrong.

The Adobo Chronicles later learned that as Miss Philippines was making her way to the stage, she had to walk through the hotel’s kitchen like everyone else. Then all of a sudden, a bucket of pineapple, strawberry and ube (purple yam) meringue fell off one of the kitchen shelves, dousing Lastimosa with the fruit-flavored and sticky pie filling.

Being the professional that she is, Lastimosa continued on as her name was called for the national costume segment. When asked by the judges to describe her national costume, she smiled and said, ” It represents the colorful melting pot history of my country which in different periods was colonized and ruled by Spain, Japan and the United States. Pineapple and strawberry are also my favorite fruits, not to mention my favorite vegetable, ube.”

Again the Filipinos in the audience cheered and applauded.

The finals of the Miss Universe Pageant will be held January 25.

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Yesterday, The Adobo Chronicles published a story about a controversial oil painting by Filipino artist Dante Hipolito. The portrait, ‘Salubong,’ depicts Pope Francis being welcomed by farmers and laborers. Those featured in the painting were actually rich and famous movie stars and politicians.

Many Filipinos reacted passionately to the painting. One such reaction came from netizen Nathan Briones (via the Rappler web site). He thinks the artist intended the painting to be a satirical artwork. You decide.

‘Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.’

Blessed are the rich and famous, for theirs is an oil painting with Pope Francis.
