DAVAO CITY, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Filipinos may just have commemorated their Independence Day last June 12, but already, a second celebration is in the offing, courtesy of President-elect Rod Duterte.

The Davao City Mayor has signed his first Executive Order that will take effect one minute after he is sworn into office at noon on June 30.

The order, titled, “An Act To Declare  A Second Independence Day For All Filipinos,” is in recognition of the end of the yellow government rule which has gripped the nation in the last six years.

It is common knowledge among Filipinos that under the Aquino administration, the government was one of the yellow people, by the yellow people and for the yellow people.  Even supposedly nationalistic symbols have been taken over by yellow ribbons and yellow t-shirts.  Filipinos have seen six years of progress, opportunity, recognition and fringe benefits, but only for those who subscribed to the whims and ambitions of the Aquino government and the ruling Liberal Party.

In issuing the order, Duterte said it was time for the country to return to the true colors of red, white and blue.  “Declaring our independence from the yellow color marks the end of untouchable corrupt and inefficient government officials like Transportation Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya, Manila International Airport Authority General Manager Jose Honrado and others in agencies like Customs, Internal Revenue and the National Prisons. Also gone are the days of privileged celebrities like Cynthia Patag, Jim Paredes and Leah Navarro,” Duterte added.

To make the new national holiday more meaningful, the Duterte administration will provide complimentary admission to the Hollywood film, “Independence Day,” currently showing in theaters nationwide.  The free admission will only be for moviegoers who will not be wearing anything with the color yellow.

Mayor Estrada Wants To Convert Manila’s Slums Into Colorful Murals

Metro Manila slums, left, and the mural project in La Trinidad, Benguet, right

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – If you can’t lick ’em, join ’em.  This seems to be the stance of Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada as his administration tries to find a solution to the growing slum problem in his city.

Slum areas abound in the city, and while they are a testament to the reality of Manila’s overcrowding and poverty, they are also an inevitable eye sore that have put a dent on the government’s efforts to promote tourism.

So, Estrada is proposing to convert all slum areas into colorful murals, an idea that he is copying from a mural project in La Trinidad, the capital of Benguet province.

The La Trinidad mural involves the painting of houses located at Stonehill above the Balili river.  A total of 170 houses have been colorized to simulate giant flowers with multicolored petals.  It has been a work of volunteers, including residents on the hill.

The La Trinidad mural approximates that of the famed favelas in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

In announcing his plan, Estrada said that the city government will provide free paint to slum residents who will color their abode with carefully coordinated designs by professional artists.

The Adobo Chronicles learned that some slum areas will look like hills blooming with sunflowers while others will look like extensions of Manila Bay, where even the polluted water of the Pasig River will be painted blue to simulate the ocean. There will no longer be a need to “hide” Manila’s street children during international events since they will look like happy kids playing at white sand beaches which will also be part of the mural.

Estrada hopes that once the city-wide project is completed, Manila will once again become a favorite destination of tourists and be chosen as the site for many international gatherings including the Miss Universe Beauty Pageant, the World Cup, the Olympics and perhaps even the  Cannes Film Festival.

Westboro Baptist Church Launches National Recycling Program, Appeals For Support

image.jpegTOPEKA, Kansas (The Adobo Chronicles, San Francisco Bureau) – The Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church may be known as a hate group, indulging in high-profile pickets of gay and lesbian events and military funerals, but it also prides itself with its social and environmental advocacy.

Buried in its controversial planned picket of funerals of the victims of the Orlando gay bar shooting is its noble concern for environmental issues.

Unknown to many, the church has recently launched a national recycling program and is asking both supporters and critics to help achieve its 2016 recycling goal.

The church has appealed to pet owners to recycle their dogs’ and cats’ poop by mailing them to its Topeka headquarters.

Those willing to help with the noble recycling program are asked to mail their dog and cat poop to:

Westboro Baptist Church, 3701 SW 12th Street, Topeka, Kansas, 66604.

The cost of mailing is tax-deductible to the full extent of the law.
