Philippine Supreme Court Suspends Words And Phrases From The Dictionary

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – In a decision suspending former Press Secretary Trixie Cruz Angeles for use of “gravely abusive, offensive, and improper language” in a court pleading, the Philippine Supreme Court has, in effect, also suspended words and phrases from the English Dictionary.

The high court decision stems from a complaint filed by a fellow lawyer stating that Angeles and Atty. Ahmed Paglinawan used offensive language in a pleading filed for a case of unlawful detainer. (Ahmed was reprimanded, this being his first infraction). The Integrated Bar of the Philippines Commission subsequently recommended for the suspension which the SC affirmed.

The Supreme Court is advising lawyers, students, journalists and others using the English language to refrain from using these words and phrases until it has lifted the suspension: patsy, pawn, bogus, incorrigible liar, oppressive, Marcosian, henchmen, despotic, depraved.

The court suggested that Filipinos use a Thesaurus to find alternate words and phrases.

When Courtesy Is Met With Sour-Graping

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Sour-graping is defined as exhibiting a negative attitude to something because they cannot have it themselves.

Philippine President Bongbong Marcos was being presidential when he extended an invitation to ex-Vice President Leni Robredo to attend his second State of the Nation Address (SONA) next week.

But Marcos’ courtesy was met with sour-graping by the one whom he defeated by a landslide in the 2022 presidential elections. Robredo declined the invitation.

“Thanks, but no thanks,” she seemed to say.

Or was it just “No” (without the thanks)?

Some people are gracious in defeat. Others are just defeated.

Miss Philippines Tourism Herlene Budol: A Queen With No International Pageant To Go To!

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – She may have won a major crown in the recent Miss Grand Philippines beauty pageant, but Herlene Budol’s Miss Tourism Philippines title is nothing but one in limbo!

A statement from ALV Pageant Circle and Miss Grand Philippines says that there is yet no assurance that Budol will represent the Philippines in the Miss Tourism World Pageant in London.

International pageants seem to be Budol’s achilles heel. Many will recall that the comedienne turned beauty queen withdrew from last year’s Miss Planet International pageant after experiencing “uncertainties” from the pageant organizers.
