Duterte Says He’d Pick Coco Martin Over Leni Robredo

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday said that he’d pick any  or all of the outstanding government personnel to replace Leni Robredo as Vice President. He made the remark before a group of government workers recognized for outstanding government service. He said it on the same day the Supreme Court (SC) announced the completion of a report on the result of the pilot recount in the vice presidential poll protest.

But in speaking with The Adobo Chronicles today, Duterte added that he’d even pick actor Coco Martin over Robredo.

Martin stars in the popular, long-running teleserye, “Ang Probinsiyano.”

”At least, we know Coco will be a champion in fighting corruption, just like in his role as a cop on the TV show,” Duterte said.

The President is known for his penchant for appointing members and ex-members of the military and police.

Senator Risa Hontiveros Files POGIE Bill

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Sensing that her Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Expression (SOGIE) bill is headed for failure, Opposition Senator Risa Hontiveros filed a new proposal she is calling ‘POGIE.’

POGIE stands for Pet Orientation and Gender Identity Expression.

Hontiveros’ new bill, which is aimed at protecting the rights of animals, will prohibit veterinarians from indicating the gender of newly-born pets in their birth certificates.  The proposal prescribes for a waiting period of 3 years (that’s 21 in dog years) before a pet owner can have his or her animal’s gender indicated on the birth certificate.

In batting for the new bill, Hontiveros said the 3-year waiting period will allow pet owners to observe the sexual behaviour of their animal companions.  It will ensure that their pets will not be wrongfully assigned a gender at birth.

The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS), a volunteer-based, non-government organization whose aim is to prevent animal cruelty, has thrown its 100% support for Hontiveros’ proposal.

Facebook Adopts GCTA For Suspended Accounts

MENLO PARK, California (The Adobo Chronicles, San Francisco Bureau) – Facing criticism about its process and decision-making protocol regarding the suspension of accounts it considers in violation of community standards, Facebook announced today that it was adopting a new policy patterned after a Philippine law called Good Conduct and Time Allowance (GCTA).

GCTA allows those convicted of crime to be released early from jail based on demonstrated good conduct during incarceration.

Facebook said that henceforth, it will cut suspension time for those mass-reported for violation of community standards with these conditions:

  • The suspended account holder must promise to post a public apology for violating FB’s community standards immediately after reinstatement of his or her account.
  • The suspended account holder must submit a letter-clearance from FB fact-checking partners Rappler and Vera Files.
  • The suspended account holder must submit a certificate of good moral character signed by his or her Barangay Captain.
  • Submitting a letter signed by a Congressman or Senator is a plus.

Facebook says suspension time can be cut from one month to as little as 48 hours provided all the above requirements are submitted.
