HOLLYWOOD, California (The Adobo Chronicles, San Francisco Bureau) – It has long been rumored that a remake of the 1993 film, “Joy Luck Club” was about to go into production, with the Asian American community eagerly anticipating to once again see Amy Tan’s novel on the big screen.

The film’s story line features a series of flashbacks in which four young Chinese women born in America and their respective mothers born in feudal China, explore their past. This search will help them understand their difficult mother/daughter relationship.

The original cast included Asian American actresses  Kieu Chinh, Tsai Chin, France Nuyen and Lisa Lu as the mothers; and Ming-Na Wen, Tamlyn Tomita, Lauren Tom and Rosalind Chao as the daughters.

Today, Hollywood Pictures confirmed the rumors and announced it would start filming in early June for theater release on Christmas Day this year.

The production company said that because of the lack of Asian and Asian American actresses in Hollywood, it has assembled a powerhouse cast who will be playing the mothers.  They are: Tilda Swinton, Emma Stone, Laura Dern and Patricia Arquette.

Hollywood Pictures did not reveal who will play the daughters, but it is rumored that Jennifer Lawrence will play one of them.

In addition to going for best actress and best supporting actress Oscar nominations, Hollywood Pictures is confident the remake will win big in costume and make-up.

Roxas, Robredo Encounter Hostile Catholic Clergy

image.jpegMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) –  It was supposed to be a peaceful and spiritual climax to many months of rigorous campaigning for Liberal Party standard-bearers Mar Roxas and Leni Robredo.

On the day before the final “miting de avance,” the party’s presidential and vice presidential candidates decided to attend church services at a local cathedral to pray for victory in Monday’s elections.  They were accompanied by about a dozen or so supporters in their trademark yellow t-shirts.

At the end of the service as they were leaving the cathedral, Roxas and Robredo flashed the “L” sign as a way to thank the clergy who helped in the celebration, music and liturgy.

To their surprise, the clergy – bishops, priests and brothers — flashed back not the “L” sign but the “closed fist” sign, making known their support and approval for rival presidential candidate, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.

Sometimes, just praying quietly is more than sufficient.

HONOLULU, Hawaii (The Adobo Chronicles, Hawaii Bureau) – Move over, Philippine carrot man, you’ve got some serious competition in Hawaii.

Many will recall the young man from the Philippines’ Mountain Province, Jeyrick Sigmaton, whose snap shot photo went viral because of his good looks.  The rest is history, as Sigmaton now appears on television and has earned a modeling career.

Now, another Internet sensation is brewing.  He’s not just a carrot man, he’s also a banana and green veggie man.  His name is Chris Lee, from the island of Oahu in Hawaii.

We doubt, however, that he will leave his day job for a career in modeling or film and TV.  He is a state legislator, representing Kailua and Waimanalo.

Well, if his photo goes viral worldwide, he might just reconsider! So, share away…
