ADELE’S ‘HELLO’ CLIMBS TO THE TOP OF ‘MOST ANNOYING SONG’ CHARTS

imageLOS ANGELES, California (The Adobo Chronicles) – Remember Adele Dazeem, a.k.a. Idina Menzel, and her hit song ‘Let It Go’ from the animated film ‘Frozen?’

Of course you do.  You must have been one of the millions who thought of the song as the most annoying ever.  Not because it was not a great song, but because it never stopped playing on radio, on YouTube, on Facebook, in Karaoke bars.

Well, move over Adele Dazeem, it’s Adele’s turn, the real Adele, with her hit single ‘Hello.’

The song has broken world records and there is not a single soul who has not heard ‘Hello’ or saw  a music video of it on the Internet.  Hey, even Saturday Night Live did an entire segment about the song — a spoof of what could happen at family dinners this Thanksgiving Day.

Success has its downside, and we feel sorry for Adele.

DAVAO CITY, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – On again, off again. That’s how Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte’s bid to become the next president of the Philippines has been characterized by his followers and opponents,  and by the media.

Well, it’s on again.  After repeated statements that he was not interested in the position, the tough-talking Duterte, who is known for his extra-judicial style of management, says that he has decided to run in the 2016 elections.  His latest pronouncement was triggered by the Senate Electoral Trubunal (SET) ruling throwing out the disqualification case against Senator Grace Poe.  The case was filed on the grounds that as a foundling, Poe is not a natural-born citizen and is therefore ineligible to run for president.image

We, at The Adobo Chronicles have been accused of reporting ‘hoax’ stories, so Duterte’s recent announcement about running for president must be a hoax, right?

Or so do many Filipinos hope.

NEW OFFICIAL LANGUAGES RECOGNIZED: HAWAII’S PIDGIN, PHILIPPINES’ SWARDSPEAK

imageHONOLULU, Hawaii (The Adobo Chronicles ) – Pidgin, spoken in Hawaii for decades, is now listed as one of the official languages in the islands.

The list was released by the U.S. Census Bureau in November after a five-year survey was conducted on bilingual speakers. The census surveyed more than 325,000 Hawaii residents from 2009 to 2013, asking whether they spoke any language other than English at home.

The results revealed a number of Pidgin and Hawaiian Pidgin speakers. Both were added to the census list that included over 100 languages, representative of the islands diversity.

Pidgin is a combination of expressions and phrases that are recognizable to those who speak it. To non-Pidgin speakers, it may sound like slang. For example, “dat” means that and “fadda” means father or dad.

Meanwhile, in the Philippines, swardspeak (also known as bekimon) has been added to the official languages that include Tagalog and English.

Swardspeak is a form of slang (and therefore highly dynamic, as opposed to colloquialisms) that is built upon preexisting languages. It deliberately transforms or creates words that resemble words from other languages, particularly English, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, French, and German. It is colorful, witty, and humorous, with vocabularies derived from popular culture and regional variations. It is unintelligible to people not familiar with the Filipino gay culture or do not know the rules of usage. However the language has crossed over to the heterosexul community, especially in show business.

Free swardspeak lessons re being conducted regularly by BarangGay, a social group of Filipino American LGBTs based in the San Francisco Bay Area.
