HOW PACQUIAO AND MAYWEATHER WILL SPLIT THE PRIZE MONEY

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (The Adobo Chronicles) – In an unexpected turn of events on the eve of the ‘Fight of the Century,’ American boxer Floyd Mayweather has agreed to revise the agreed-upon split of the total prize money for the welterweight championship match with Filipino Manny Pacquiao.

Proving to the world that it is not all about the money, Mayweather agreed to split the almost $300 Million prize money on a pound-per-pound basis, instead of the 60-40 split which favored the American.

After the official weigh-in yesterday, Pacquiao weighed in at 145 pounds and Mayweather registered 146 pounds.

This means that Pacquiao will get $146 Million and Mayweather will get $147 Million.

Both camps hailed the new split, saying that it is more fair and equitable, considering that both fighters are now almost equal in popularity.

Anything in excess of $293 Million will be donated to the Nepal earthquake relief.

BIRD FLU EPIDEMIC IN U.S. PROMPTS STATES TO INCREASE BALUT IMPORTS FROM PHILIPPINES

DES MOINES, Iowa (The Adobo Chronicles) – While some New Yorkers  have signed a petition demanding a Filipino restaurant in Manhattan to strike off balut from its menu, states like Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota have increased their quota for the importation of this Filipino delicacy.  Balut is a boiled duck embryo popular as a street food in the Philippines.

Iowa became the third state to declare an emergency response to a fast-expanding U.S. bird-flu outbreak on Friday as the national poultry death toll climbed toward record levels.

Officials in Iowa, the biggest egg-producing state, said they had identified four more suspected cases of avian influenza, and the likely number of birds affected in the state is now more than 16 million. Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad declared a state of emergency, the same move that was made last month by his counterparts in Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Branstad said the state government is doing all it can to ensure that Iowans get their recommended daily intake of dairy, consistent with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s nutrition guide, My Plate, which recommends the amount of daily foods that Americans should consume for a healthy life.

“We are asking Iowans to eat  balut instead of chicken or eggs during this period of emergency to ensure both their safety and their nutritional health,” Branstad said.

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – In boxing, a weight class is a standardized weight range for boxers. The lower limit of a weight class is equal to the upper weight limit of the class below it. A boxing match is usually scheduled for a fixed weight class, and each boxer’s weight must not exceed the upper limit.

For the welterweight class, under which the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight is scheduled for May 2nd at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, the upper weight limit is 147 lbs. or 66.7 kilograms (the lower limit is 140 lbs which is the upper limit for the super lightweight class).

Manny Pacquiao has been training so hard and eating so healthy that his weight going into tomorrow’s fight night was down to 143 pounds. While that does not disqualify Pacquiao under the welterweight rules, there are rumors that his opponent, Floyd Mayweather may exceed the upper limit of 147 pounds.

Mayweather has been very confident he would easily defeat the Filipino boxer that he has been training very lightly while binge-eating and drinking in exclusive restaurants in Las Vegas.Sources close to the American boxer have been heard as saying that as of last private weigh-in, he had registered 159 pounds.

While Manny’s coach Freddie Roach is worried that his protégé would be at a great disadvantage if he weighed close to the lower limit under the welterweight class, Floyd’s uncle and trainer Roger Mayweather is losing sleep over the possibility that his nephew will be disqualified for being overweight.

It all boils down to the official weigh-in which is just hours away! The magic numbers to watch for are 140 to 147.

UPDATE!!!  The official weigh-in has just concluded! Mayweather weighed in a 146 lbs. and Pacquiao at 145 lbs.  Tuloy ang laban!  (The fight is on!)
