MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Many Filipinos are wondering how Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte can still run for Philippine president when the deadline for the filing of candidacy has passed.  The answer is in an unspoken law that allows declared candidates belonging to a political party to withdraw and designate a “substitute.”

Martin Diño, the presidential candidate of Partido Demokratikong Pilipino-Laban ng Bayan (PDP-Laban)  withdrew from the race on Oct. 29 to pave the way for Duterte to run in his stead.

There is one problem, though. The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) is pursuing cases in which it would declare certain candidates as “nuisance candidates,” and subsequently disqualifying them from the electoral race.  Diño is one of those candidates.

So, run if he will, but Duterte will be declared by COMELEC as a nuisance candidate, because a nuisance candidate like Diño can only be replaced by another nuisance candidate.

It’s more fun in the Philippines. Especially in politics!

DUTERTE’S RUN FOR PHILIPPINE PRESIDENCY A HOAX?

DAVAO CITY, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – On again, off again. That’s how Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte’s bid to become the next president of the Philippines has been characterized by his followers and opponents,  and by the media.

Well, it’s on again.  After repeated statements that he was not interested in the position, the tough-talking Duterte, who is known for his extra-judicial style of management, says that he has decided to run in the 2016 elections.  His latest pronouncement was triggered by the Senate Electoral Trubunal (SET) ruling throwing out the disqualification case against Senator Grace Poe.  The case was filed on the grounds that as a foundling, Poe is not a natural-born citizen and is therefore ineligible to run for president.image

We, at The Adobo Chronicles have been accused of reporting ‘hoax’ stories, so Duterte’s recent announcement about running for president must be a hoax, right?

Or so do many Filipinos hope.

FILIPINOS HOARD PESOS IN ANTICIPATION OF ESTABLISHMENT OF THE ASEAN ECONOMIC COMMUNITY (AEC)

PhilippinePesoKUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (The Adobo Chronicles) – Leaders of Southeast Asia will formally sign a charter on Sunday to announce the creation of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), which would be similar to the European Union (EU).

The new entity will become formal on December 31 and will include member countries from the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam.

The declaration will be made at the 27th ASEAN Summit this weekend in Kuala Lumpur.

The idea of AEC is patterned after EU where member countries have a single common currency (the Euro) and entry visas (Schengen visas) to one country are valid for travel in the rest of the EU member countries.

News like this travels fast in the Philippines and already, it has fueled speculation that the Philippine peso will ultimately be designated as the common currency for AEC.

This has prompted many Filipinos to hoard their pesos in the hope that it will escalate in value once it becomes the AEC’s common currency.

The Central Bank of the Philippines is reporting what appears to be a diminishing circulation of the Philippine peso.  Retailers have also noticed a sudden decline in purchases of goods and services, presumably because Filipinos are holding on to their currency.

This is despite the announcement from ASEAN and the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs that having a single common currency is not part of the plan of the new AEC. At least, not yet.

But, Filipinos always want to err on the safe side.

Filipinos already enjoy a visa-free status to most of the ASEAN countries.
