Move Over, McDonald’s, It’s Burger King Versus Jollibee

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – The rivalry between America’s McDonald’s and the Philippines’ Jollibee has finally come to an end.  The popular Filipino fastfood chain has taken on a new rival, challenging the next best thing to McDonalds — Burger King.

On March 31, Burger King is launching its newest  menu item it is calling the “angriest burger,” featuring a red bun.  Apparently an earlier black version of its hamburger ban didn’t quite click with its customers.

Not to be outdone, Jollibee has announced that on April 1, it will launch its answer to the angriest burger — the bloodiest siopao.

Siopao, or stuffed steamed bun, is the Asian version of the American hamburger bun.

The brewing competition between Burger King and Jollibee is based on which bun is redder. Or angrier. Or bloodier.

The McWhopper Joy meal combo

NEW YORK, New York (The Adobo Chronicles® ) – On September 21, the world commemorates the International Day of Peace as designated by the United Nations General Assembly.  It also marks the U.N. body’s opening day of its annual meeting.

To create greater awareness of the occasion, Burger King has proposed opening up a pop-up store in a parking lot between McDonald’s and Burger King in Atlanta, Georgia.

The goal? To operate one restaurant for one day staffed by employees of both companies and selling a burger called the McWhopper, a blend of the Big Mac and the Whopper, the best-selling burgers at McDonald’s and Burger King.

Sales proceeds would be donated to Peace One Day, a nonprofit group seeking to raise awareness of the International Day of Peace.

To make it a truly international event, the Philippines’ top fast food company, Jollibee, is joining the effort and will add its famous spaghetti to the day’s special meal package. Jollibee will even throw in a medium soda and a small cup of frozen yogurt.

September 21 also happens to be the anniversary of the official proclamation of Martial Law by the late Ferdinand E. Marcos in 1972.

“We’ll be hitting two birds with one stone,” said Ernesto Tan Mantiong, Chief Executive Officer of Jollibee. “It shows our commitment to world peace and the rule of law.”

The McDonald’s-Burger King-Jollibee meal combo will be called McWhopper Joy. (Jollibee’s famous chicken is called ‘Chicken Joy.’)

NAACP WANTS BURGER KING TO PULL ITS BLACK BURGER

imageTokyo, Japan (The Adobo Chronicles) – NAACP, the oldest and largest civil rights organization in the U.S. is demanding that the fast food giant Burger King pull the black burger from the menu of its stores in Japan.

The black burger consists of black-colored hamburger buns and black cheese smoked over bamboo charcoal, seasoned with black pepper and squid ink sauce. It is gaining wide popularity in Tokyo and other cities in Japan.

In a strongly-worded statement, the NAACP said that the burger, regardless of its taste, does nothing but perpetuate negative sentiments against black and colored people.  “We cannot allow Burger King to commercialize an entire race for profit motives,” the statement said.image

Informed sources said that because of its popularity in Japan, Burger King is planning to introduce the black burger in the rest of Asia, Australia, South America and Europe. The fast food chain is reportedly very hesitant to introduce the item in the U.S. because of increasing racial tensions and widespread political correctness among Americans.

Burger King has not returned our calls asking whether it will eventually add black fries to its menu.
