Maria Ressa To Seek Asylum At Columbia University In New York!

NEW YORK, New York (The Adobo Chronicles, New York Bureau) – Rappler CEO and convict Maria Ressa is seeking asylum in the United States under the guise of a teaching job at New York’s Columbia University.

Facing possible jail time should the Philippine Supreme Court junk her appeal to overturn her conviction by a lower court of the crime of cyber libel, the Nobel Laureate chose to seek protective shelter in a U.S. academic institution.

Being a U.S. and Philippine dual citizen, Ressa does not really need to seek political asylum in America, but she chose to be under the protective custody of Columbia to escape jail time in the Philippines.

Ressa is set to join Columbia as a professor in the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA).

The announcement made by Columbia last June 28 said Maria Ressa will at first be lecturing as a distinguished fellow at the Institute of Global Politics (IGP) in Fall 2023 and will begin teaching at SIPA in July 2024.

The Adobo Chronicles reached out to the staff of Rappler who all declined to comment on what their future holds if Ressa eventually shuts down the online news portal.

The Real UniTeam: Dilawan And Pinklawan!

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – It seems the “UniTeam” under which Bongbong Marcos and Sara Duterte won the 2022 Philippine elections is dissipating — thanks to the infighting between the sold Marcos loyalists and the Die-hard Dutertes.

As the 2025 mid-term elections draw near, the opposition, now informally led by ex-Vice President Leni Robredo, is changing strategy. During the campaign, Robredo tried to distance herself from the Aquino Yellows which led her to use pink as her color.

But in unity, there is strength. So the two Opposition factions — the Dilawan (Yellows) and the Pinklawan (Pinks) are coming together to strategize for a big win in 2025 and subsequently in the next presidential elections of 2028.

Expect the resurgence of the two colors going forward.

Senator Risa Hontiveros Renames SOGIE Bill!

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – It’s been languishing in the Senate for some time now and the chances of its passing are still nil.

“It” is the SOGIE Bill – Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Equality, authored by Senator Risa Hontiveros.

In order to increase its chances of becoming law, Hontiveros announced she was renaming the bill SHOKIE – Stop Harassment of Kababayan in Intersex Engagement.

This new bill title, she says, is more inclusive and does not imply special rights and privileges for the LGBTQIA+ community.

“Intersex encompasses all genders, orientation and preferences and we are hopeful this will address all the concerns of my fellow lawmakers,” Hontiveros told The Adobo Chronicles.
