HALLOWEEN IN THE CASTRO RETURNS IN 2014!

imageSan Francisco, California – It was an agreement four years in the making, oftentimes marred by shouting matches among city hall officials, representatives of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, merchants and homeowners.  But the Halloween party in San Francisco’s gay Castro district finally returns in 2014.

It will be recalled that the Halloween bash attracted as many as 500,000 each year and has become a major tourist attraction, second  and third only to the Pride parade and Folsom Street Fair.  Stabbing and shooting incidents, believed to be perpetrated by straight revelers, prompted city officials to permanently ban the event beginning in 2010.

As part of the agreement, the “new” Castro Halloween will be open only to members of the LGBTQ community who will have to register with city hall and be included in a “gay registry.”  Registrants, who will take an oath admitting that they are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or questioning, will be issued special identification cards linked to the official registry.  The IDs will be the only accepted pass to gain entry to the Halloween event. ID’s will be scanned at entrances to the event to confirm that individuals are listed in the official registry.

Get ready to say “Boo!” Again.

NEW OSCAR ACTING AWARDS RULES ANNOUNCED

Redford
Redford

Hollywood, California – James Franco in 127 Hours. Sandra Bullock in Gravity. Robert Redford in All Is Lost. They have one thing in common: being the only (or mostly the only) actor in a full-feature movie. Hollywood appears to be picking up more and more on this trend because of, among other reasons, financial benefits — having to pay only one actor instead of multiple actors and extras.

Recognizing the trend, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced a major change in its Oscar nomination rules, effective with the 2013 acting awards.

Actors and actresses featured in single actor films, or being the only one in at least 50% of the entire film, can now be nominated for BOTH best actor/actress and supporting actor/actress. With the new rules, it is now possible for an actor or actress to win two awards in any given Oscar season — both as best actor/actress and best supporting actor/actress.

In justifying the new rules, the Academy said that in films with single actors or actresses,
“they are basically interacting with themselves and that takes some acting ablity; so they need to be recognized for such great skill.”

Will we see Sandra  Bullock nominated for Best Actress and Supporting Actress, and Robert Redford for Best Actor and Supporting Actor?

FANS URGE MISS PHILIPPINES TO ANSWER FINAL QUESTION IN TAGALOG

imageManila, Philippines – In a television interview prior to her departure for Moscow, Russia to compete in this year’s Miss Universe Pageant, Miss Philippines Ariella Arida tried to address criticism about her English language skills. Unfortunately, her response to the interview question put her in hot water, when she said that Latina candidates in the pageant can’t even speak a complete English sentence. Her comment drew protests from citizens of Latin countries who described her response as offensive.

Miss Arida has since apologized for her comment. But that hasn’t stopped her fans and supporters from petitioning the Binibining Pilipinas Charities, franchise holder of the Miss Philippines Universe Pageant, to allow Miss Arida to answer the final question in her native Tagalog tongue should she be selected as one of the top five finalists in the Miss Universe Pageant. Miss Arida is among the early favorites to win the crown.

Past Philippine bets in this most prestigious beauty pageant have done very well in the competition, reaching the finals only to lose the crown because of their not-so-smart response to the final question, in English.

Fans and supporters believe that it would be best for Miss Arida to answer the final question in Tagalog and avail the services of an interpreter so that she can better express herself and avoid a potential blunder response that has  cost past Philippine candidates the much-coveted crown.

Binibining Pilipinas Charities founder and chairperson Stella Marquez-Araneta has not responded to the fans’ request.
