U.S. SURGEON GENERAL’S WARNING: TEXTING CAUSES NUMB THUMB

imageBETHESDA, Maryland (The Adobo Chronicles) – In his first major health warning since assuming the post of U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek H. Murthy has confirmed that texting is detrimental to the health of Americans.

“The repetitive movement of the thumbs while texting causes nerve damage similar to that of carpal tunnel,” Murthy said. “It is a condition known as numb thumb, which, like the name suggests causes people’s thumbs to become numb and almost paralyzed,” he added.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has reported an increasing number of numb thumb cases in the U.S. and is afraid that it will turn into an epidemic.

Since the onset of modern mobile technology, texting has replaced phone calls, letter writing and in-person conversations as the primary mode of communication, and many smart phone owners, especially younger people, have developed amazing skills in speed texting.

The Surgeon General has recommended that Americans limit their texting to no more than 15 minutes a day to avoid nerve damage and numbness in the thumb.

Among the notable Surgeon General warnings in the past came from the late C. Everett Koop who confirmed that smoking causes cancer and that condoms can prevent HIV infection.

MOUNT PLEASANT, South Carolina (The Adobo Chronicles) – First, Donald Trump said the United States should close its borders to Mexicans and immigrants. Then he called for the banning of Chinese birth tourism. Then he called for shutting out all Muslims from entering the United States.

Now, the Republican presidential candidate and frontrunner says America should ban all foolish people,  referring to those who advocate freedom of speech under the U.S. Constutution’s First Amendment.

In a campaign speech in South Carolina this week, Trump suggested that “we should close the Internet in some places as a way to stop terrorism. He says he will call Bill Gates and others who know what’s going on.

Trump said he expects many people to criticize his Internet closure proposal on First Amendment grounds, but “these are foolish people. There are a lot of foolish people  and they should all be banned from America.” This latest statement didn’t sit well with many of his own supporters, especially the foolish people who keep on voting for him in the polls.

Trump continues to surge in the polls with a double-digit lead over his closest rival  Senator Ted Cruz.

FACEBOOK CONNECTS FRIENDS AND FAMILY, BUT ALSO DIVIDES THEM

imageSAN FRANCISCO, California (The Adobo Chronicles) – Social media is supposed to connect you up with friends and family and create a loving and supportive network through the Internet.  But alas, Facebook also divides and separates friends and family, especially when it comes to politics.

Ever wondered who among your Facebook friends like Donald Trump, or Ted Cruz, or Bernie Sanders, or Hillary Clinton? Hell, even George Bush or Dick Cheney?

If you are Filipino, do you know who among your friends support which presidential candidate: Mar Roxas, Rodrigo Duterte, Grace Poe, Jejomar Binay or Miriam Defensor-Santiago?

Easy. Thanks to Facebook’s brilliant algorithms and database.

All you need to do is log on to your Facebook account, and in the search box, type in: “My Facebook friends who like (fill in the blanks).”  The results may or may not surprise you, but we know of netizens who have unfriended people because of what their search revealed.

Technology has its ups, but also downs. And politics can be divisive.
