CNN’S PIA HONTIVEROS TO SUE VP LENI ROBREDO FOR CYBER LIBEL

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – CNN Philippines’ news host Pia Hontiveros today told The Adobo Chronicles that she will be suing Vice President Leni Robredo for cyber libel — the same crime Rappler CEO Maria Ressa was convicted for.

The impending lawsuit stems from Hontiveros’ interview with Robredo on the program “Newsnight” where the Vice President called her ‘Karen.’

Hontiveros said being named ‘Karen’ was derogatory, a lie, and malicious. She, however, didn’t mention her ABS-CBN rival broadcaster, Karen Davila, as the person concerned in the “unfair comparison.”

While the interview happened on television, the news segment as well as taped videos of the newscast were widely shared on the Internet, exacerbating Hontiveros’ humiliation. So that counts towards “cyber” libel.

CNN’S PIA HONTIVEROS TO LENI ROBREDO: I AM NO KAREN

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – In the United States and on social media, the name ‘Karen’ has become quite derogatory. It’s often used as a label for a white woman who uses her privilege to threaten or try to intimidate others.

So you can just imagine CNN Philippines’ Pia Hontiveros’ consternation when Vice President Leni Robredo called her ‘Karen.’

When Robredo addressed her as ‘Karen’ during an interview on the program ‘Newsnight,’ Hontiveros was quick to interrupt the Vice President by saying, “Hindi po ito si Karen.” ( This is not Karen.)

But does Hontiveros’ objection to being called ‘Karen’ go beyond the viral Internet label? Does it have something to do with professional rivalry between her and the real Karen, fellow broadcaster Karen Davila?

VP LENI ROBREDO TO SUE RAPPLER FOR CYBER LIBEL!

QUEZON CITY, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Quezon City Bureau) – Yet another cyber libel case is hanging over the head of Rappler and its CEO, Maria Ressa. This time, the law suit is coming from Vice President Leni Robredo.

The impending law suit stems from a Twitter post by Rappler.com in which Robredo’s daughters compared U.S. President Donald Trump’s claim of poll cheating to the 2016 Vice Presidential elections where their mom narrowly won over opponent Bongbong Marcos. (The electoral protest filed by Marcos against Robredo remains unresolved and is still pending with the Presidential Electoral Tribunal or PET.)

The Vice President is suing Rappler for the caption, “Lugaw, anyone” which accompanied its Twitter post.

“Lugaw” (rice porridge) is considered by the Robredos as derogatory. It is a label used by Duterte Die-hard Supporters (DDS) to ridicule the Vice President. The label stems from statements attributed to her claiming she raised campaign funds by selling lugaw.

“And I thought, Ressa and Rappler were on our side,” the VP said. “I was wrong.

Ressa was earlier convicted of cyber libel in a case filed by a private businessman.
