If Cory Aquino Becomes Third Filipino Saint, What Would PNoy, Kris Be Called?

imageQUEZON CITY, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – The Philippines just had its third Miss Universe (Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach). Now the Filipinos may soon have their third saint.  At least that’s what a Jesuit priest close to the Aquino family is hoping for.

Fr. Catalino Arevalo believes that former President Corazon Aquino should be canonized a saint because of her “extraordinary Christian virtues.”

Arevalo says it is time to start the sainthood process for Aquino.  The process starts with beatification which, as per rules of the Roman Catholic Church, can only begin six years after a person’s death. Cory died of colon cancer in August of 2009.

The Aquino family are reportedly excited about the prospect.

If Cory becomes a saint, President NoyNoy can be called, “Anak ng Santa” (Son of a Saint).  Kris Aquino can be called “Santa Santita” (Saint Wannabe).

As for NoyNoy’s three other sisters?  Well, perhaps they can be called “Tres Marias” (Three Mary’s).

Sainthood is oftentimes a long and tedious process.  Among other things, it requires of the sainthood candidate to perform several miracles.

Perhaps one miracle would be that the farmers of the Aquino family’s Hacienda Luisita in Tarlac province will finally own the land they have been tilling for so long.  Land Reform itself is hard to come by in the Philippines.  That would be another miracle!

American Women Would Rather Give Up Pregnancy Than Alcohol, Filipino Women Prefer Babies

imageATLANTA, Georgia (The Adobo Chronicles) – The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has just released a new report that estimated 3.3 million women between the ages of 15 and 44 years are at risk of exposing their developing baby to alcohol because they are drinking, sexually active, and not using birth control to prevent pregnancy.

“Alcohol can permanently harm a developing baby before a woman knows she is pregnant,” said CDC Principal Deputy Director Anne Schuchat, M.D.

Women of childbearing age are advised not to drink at all if there’s any possibility of pregnancy, federal officials said.  Drinking alcohol puts women in danger of having their babies born with fetal alcohol syndrome disorder.

Following the CDC announcment, The Adobo Chronicles conducted two polls — one in the U.S. and another in the Philippines — asking women of childbearing age whether or not they were willing to give up alcohol in order to have healthy babies. The results from the two countries were exact opposites.

U.S. women would rather give up pregnancy because refraining from alcohol jeopardizes their social life and because the cost of rearing babies have skyrocketed over the last decade or so.

Filipino women, on the other hand, said that they would prefer to have babies because Philippine Catholic Bishops have previously stated that children are the country’s greatest resource and that a population increase would be a great boost to the Philippine economy.

It is estimated that yearly remittances to the Philippines from overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) have reached a staggering $18 Billion.

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) –  The Philippine Inquirer is reporting that presidential candidate Rodrigo Duterte is planning to visit The Vatican to ask Pope Francis for forgiveness.

The foul-mouthed mayor of Davao City, whose statements are punctuated by expletives, recently cursed Francis for creating a huge traffic jam during the Pontiff’s visit to Manila last year.  He has since regretted the unacceptable behaviour.

Upon learning of Duterte’s planned visit to The Vatican, Pope Francis posted the following message on his Facebook page:

“OMG, Duterte is coming to The Vatican! By the grace of God, he has finally come to his senses. I will be happy to give him a private audience, but I have long forgiven him for his nasty comments about me.”

Duterte is currently ranked No. 1 among the 5 major presidential candidates.  His visit to The Vatican will surely endear him to the millions of Filipino Catholic voters and could ensure his victory in the forthcoming elections in May.
