Philippine Catholic Bishops Ban Halloween Parties

img_6724MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) reminded the public to spend money on charity instead of going to costume parties.

Ozamiz Bishop Martin Jumoad told Radyo Veritas that attending Halloween parties will not benefit a person’s faith. He said Filipinos should instead help typhoon survivors and other people who are in need.

Jumaod said people should share their resources, especially since it is the Year of Mercy for those who are Catholic. “Cancel your Halloween parties and divert your money in helping the poor, those who are affected by the typhoon ‘Lawin’ and ‘Karen’ in Batanes and in Northern Luzon,” he said.

Reacting to Jumaod’s statement, CBCP president Socrates Villegas said the Ozamiz bishop does not speak for the entire CBCP. “The Catholic bishops of the Philippines want to maintain our profitable investments in the stock market,” he said, ” charity can wait.”

IMG_6327.JPGMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Philippine Senator Leila De Lima is sick and tired of being accused and implicated in the illegal drug trade inside the National Bilibid Prison (National Penitentiary) during her tenure as Secretary of Justice.

“I can’t take it anymore,” she said as she formally submitted her resignation from the country’s upper legislative chamber.  “I’m sorry to disappoint the millions of Filipinos who voted for me.”

It turns out that De Lima was appointed the first female pastor of the Catholic Church in a special dispensation issued by the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines.

While De Lima’s appointment is valid in the Philippines, it does not have official sanction from The Vatican.

Last Sunday, hundreds of Catholics attended De Lima’s first mass in Manila where she delivered her first homily (see photo.)

In an opinion piece published in the Daily Inquirer, Andanar compared his first meeting with Duterte in Davao City to when Jesus met the fishermen who would be his apostles at Galilee.

Andanar didn’t’ say which apostle he was — Simon Peter, James or John.
