CBCP Added As Third Fact-checker, Joining Rappler and Vera Files

044A218D-6324-4C62-AE04-7B6B13B26212MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – SUBJECT TO FACT-CHECKING BY RAPPLER –  For Rappler and Vera Files, two is a lonely number, so a third entity was added to the fact-checking partnership with Facebook, aimed at curbing the spread of fake news on social media.

The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) became the third fact-checker.

Many will recall that in a pastoral letter issued last year, CBCP told Filipino Catholics that spreading fake news is a sin against charity. It listed several websites that it considered to be sources of fake or unverified information.ADAAB6E1-88C0-4D24-B6AC-75B0492F4535

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg could not be reached for comment, but both Rappler and Vera Files told The Adobo Chronicles that they were unhappy about the CBCP’s addition  because the Catholic Church has more followers than Rappler and Vera Files combined.

Professional jealousy, eh?

Catholic Bishops Come To Leni’s Rescue Over Wet Ballots

A8AEF626-AB67-4597-A38C-94A85CAB1377MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Within hours after the start of the manual recount of contested ballots in the 2016 Vice Presidential race, the camp of Bongbong Marcos already noticed something unusual: the ballots from Leni Robredo’s bailiwick pf Camarines Sur were wet.

Immediately, there were speculations of tampering over the wet ballots, not to mention missing ballot audit logs.

But the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) swiftly came to Robredo’s rescue, saying that the ballot boxes in question may have been blessed with Holy Water by Catholic priests prior to being re-opened for the manual count.

The CBCP statement was suspicious considering that Robredo was seen at a church along with nuns and other Catholic supporters prior to the start of the Supreme Court recount.

It’s one of two things: there was a miracle, or there’s something fishy going on.  We suspect the latter.

Pope Francis Issues ‘Cease and Desist’ Order Against Filipino Activist Nun

3CB4A1B6-00FC-4A60-A119-D208C0A58951THE VATICAN (The Adobo Chronicles, Rome Bureau) – Religious priests and nuns have a vow to look after the spiritual well-being of people, not their politics.

Pope Francis issued this reminder to the Catholic clergy as he issued a ‘Cease and Desist’ order against Filipino activist nun, Sister Mary John Mananzan.

Mananzan, former head of St. Scholarstica’s College in Manila, has been in political news lately, criticizing the Duterte administration for what she calls an attack on the opposition.

The nun is also reportedly behind political protests and rallies staged by students of St. Scholastica.

”Give unto Caesar what’s due to him and to God what’s due to God,” Francis told Mananzan. “Leave politics to the politicians, and focus on religious vow and mission.”
