MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Manny Pacquiao is known the world over as the Filipino champion boxer. A few know him as a sitting Philippine Senator.
Of the many names being floated to succeed President Rodrigo Duterte when he steps down in 2022, Pacquiao’s is among the more intriguing. We’ve had movie actors as Presidents before, among them Ronald Reagan and Joseph Estrada. But a boxer?
Well, like it or not, we can now call Manny President Pacquiao.
He has just been chosen the President of Duterte’s political party, PDP-LABAN. Whether he will run for (and win as) President of the Philippines remains to be seen.
MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Many Filipinos found Vice President Leni Robredo’s recent statements quite puzzling, if not cryptic, especially coming from someone whose trademark messages are usually filled with “iyon” and “iyong.”
Is there a new speechwriter in the OVP house?
To make sense out of all of this, The Adobo Chronicles put together the key points in Robredo’s messages in a single statement for greater clarity and coherence.
MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Under the U.S. Constitution, Donald Trump has the power to grant Presidential pardons to individuals convicted of crimes. That has given Rappler CEO Maria Ressa much hope that she could be pardoned for her cyber libel conviction in the Philippines. Ressa is a dual citizen of the U.S. and the Philippines.
Informed sources told The Adobo Chronicles that Ressa is preparing a letter to Trump seeking Presidential pardon, citing her U.S. citizenship and one named by Time magazine as a Person of the Year, not to mention the many international awards she has received from various U.S. organizations. She is hoping the American President will act on her request in the next several weeks before President-elect Joe Biden is inaugurated on January 20, 2021.
