NEW YORK, New York (The Adobo Chronicles) – It was the highlight of last night’s ‘Saturday Night Live’ hosted by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump. While he was delivering his opening monologue, Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders was standing by backstage waiting for his cue.
Then it was time. As Trump was wrapping up his monologue, the cameras shifted backstage as Sanders screamed “Trump’s a racist!”
Trump said he was never informed that Sanders would be appearing on the same show and accused SNL producers of maliciously plotting to embarrass him. He’s threatening to sue.
Meanwhile, Sanders said the only reason he agreed to the cameo appearance was because SNL gave him $5,000 towards his campaign.
MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – Fearful that the Senate Electoral Tribunal (SET) will rule to unseat Grace Poe and consequently have her disqualified to run for president, supporters of the beleaguered senator are threatening a write-in vote come the 2016 Philippine presidential elections.
Poe has consistently topped the polls as the nation’s favorite to win the presidential elections, but her candidacy is threatened by petitions disqualifying her from running because of questions about her birth and citizenship. The Philippine Constitution requires candidates for president to be natural-born citizens. Poe, a foundling, was a dual citizen of the Philippines and the U.S. but maintains she had already renounced her U.S. citizenship.
Leaders of the grassroots campaign for the senator’s election, “Kay Poe Po Tayo,” announced today that if their candidate is disqualified or barred from running for president, they will troop to the polls in May of 2016 to write in an undeclared candidate to become president. The group emphasized, they will not write in Poe’s name.
Asked by The Adobo Chronicles what name they will be writing in, the campaign leaders said in unison: “Heneral Luna.”
(Heneral Luna is the lead character in a Filipino film with the same title, based on the life of one of the Philippines’ historical figures. It is the Philippines’ official submission to the 2016 Oscar Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.)
MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles ) – The Philippines’ Senate Electoral Tribunal (SET) today dismissed the disqualification case filed against Senator Grace Poe.
The case stemmed from allegations that Poe is not a natural-born citizen by virtue of being a foundling, and that she had previously renounced her Filipino citizenship when she and her children became dual citizens. Poe’s husband, Neil Llamanzares is a dual citizen of the U.S. and the Philippines.
To run for senator or president, a candidate must be a natural-born citizen.
During today’s final hearing on the case, the SET asked Poe, a candidate for president in the 2016 elections, to prove her Filipino citizenship by singing the national anthem.
Joined by her husband and step mom Susan Roces, Poe proudly placed her hand against her chest and sang the national anthem.
Alas, it was the wrong nationl anthem. It was the ‘Star Spangled Banner.’
Right there and then, the case was dismissed for obvious reasons, to the delight of the plaintiff, Rizalito David. Poe defeated David in the last senatorial elections.
