MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Rappler is reporting that Pope Francis has described journalists as “protectors of news.”
The Pope’s message was made in connection with World Communications Day.
But now it turns out that the message was “lost in translation.”
Francis made the comment in Spanish and the Rappler reporter misinterpreted it.
Sources close to the Vatican said that what the Pope actually said was that journalists were “purveyors of fake news” (noticias falsas).
The pontiff then pushed for journalism “that is truthful and opposed to all falsehoods, rhetorical slogans, and sensational headlines.” He specifically mentioned Rappler, Inquirer and The New York Times.
The Pope also apparently praised bloggers and individuals citizens who have Facebook and Twitter accounts, describing their work as “a journalism created by people for people, one that is at the service of all, especially those – and they are the majority in our world – who have no voice.”
