Malacañang Has Invited Maria Ressa As VIP Guest At Duterte’s Fourth SONA

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Perhaps it’s President Rodrigo Duterte’s way of extending an olive branch. Malacañang has invited Rappler CEO Maria Ressa as a VIP guest at Duterte’s fourth State of the Nation Address.

Ressa, of course, is known to be one of the Administrations’s fiercest critics who has accused the government of weaponizing the law to curtail her Freedom of Speech. She faces criminal charges of tax evasion and cyber libel.

Malacañang sources told The Adobo Chronicles that the President will shake Ressa’s hand before he delivers his SONA.

The last time Duterte shook someone’s hand at his SONA, that someone —Senator Leila De Lima — was subsequently put in jail.

Non Renewal Of ABS-CBN’s Franchise In Keeping With The Law — Experts

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles,  Manila Bureau) – Despite the hullabaloo and political undertones of the Philippine government’s threat to not renew the broadcasting franchise of ABS-CBN, experts agree it’s in keeping with the law.

The television network has been called out for being critical of the government and  for alleged unpaid government loans.

While optional retirement has been reduced to 56, current Philippine law still mandates compulsory retirement for citizens reaching age 65.

ABS-CBN is 65 years old now and is proud of its more than six decades ‘in the service of the Filipino.’

Experts say no one is above the law, not even the network owned by the Lopezes.

”Corporations are people and people must obey the law. ABS-CBN must retire and shut down for good,” one Constitutional expert said.
