386D72D7-70F1-4DDA-944C-95ABDF61BE7DMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manioa Bureau)  – Filipinos take their beauty pageants very seriously — especially women who belong to the Hashtag Babae Ako (#BabaeAko) movement, like Mae Paner, a.k.a. Juana Change.

Paner took to her Twitter account to condemn, in no uncertain terms, the selection of Angela Ponce as Spain’s representative to this year’s Miss Universe Pageant.  The new Miss Universe-Spain made history as the first transgender woman to join the popular international beauty pageant.

Paner said that allowing a contestant who is not “a natural-born” woman is a threat to womanhood and is an insult to the #BabaeAko movement.FF0B4139-713D-48BF-900B-D9F87E819DA7

Paner told The Adobo Chronicles that while she never tried joining a beauty contest, she still feels that allowing transgender contestants significantly reduces the chances of natural-born women to fulfill their lifelong dream of wearing the coveted crown of Miss Universe.

#BabaeAko Movement Protests Crowning Of Transgender Woman As Miss Spain-Universe

FF0B4139-713D-48BF-900B-D9F87E819DA7MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – The key figures behind the Hashtag Babae Ako (#BabaeAko) movement have sent an urgent petition to the Miss Universe Organization protesting the selection of a transgender woman as the new Miss Spain.

Angela Ponce, a trans woman, was selected to represent Spain in this year’s Miss Universe Pageant.

In their petition, the Filipina women claimed that allowing a transgender woman to compete with natural-born women is an affront to their dignity and that of all women of the world. “Can you imagine if women joined the Mr. Universe competition,” they asked.

Among those who signed the petition were Maria Lourdes Sereno, Mae Paner, a.k.a. Juana Change, journlist Inday Varona, Rappler CEO Maria Ressa and blogger Raissa Robles.

The new Miss Spain will be the very first transgender woman to enter the international beauty pageant. (Previously, a transgender woman joined the Miss Canada pageant but failed to win the much-coveted crown.)

Today, Binibining Pilipinas Charities which holds the franchise for many of the country’s beauty pageants, announced that beginning next year, it will accept candidates from the LGBT community, more particularly transgender women.
