Philippines Takes Cue From Miss Universe On The Return Of U.S. Military Bases

imageMANILA, Philippines  (The Adobo Chronicles) – When Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach was asked during last month’s Miss Universe pageant what she thought about the return of U.S. military bases in her country, she said she wouldn’t have any problem with that, noting that Filipinos are always welcoming of Americans.

We all know, of course, that Wurtzbach went on to win the crown, albeit after a short confusion when host Steve Harvey announced the wrong winner, Miss Colombia.

Filipinos have a high regard for their boxers, beauty queens and screen idols, more than they do for their politicians.  So, in a move that pleased Uncle Sam, the Philippines announced that it is set to offer the U.S. military the use of not one, not two, but eight bases.  This, after the country’s Supreme Court upheld a security agreement with Washington forged in the face of rising tensions with China.

The facilities include the former US Clark airbase and air and naval facilities on the southwestern island of Palawan which faces the South China Sea, the focus of territorial disputes with China.

The court decision allows for the full implementation of the Enhanced Defense Co-operation Agreement (EDCA), signed in 2014 but not implemented due to legal challenges from groups opposed to US military involvement in the Philippines, a US colony from 1898 to 1946.

Incidentally, the Philippines will hold its next presidential elections in May. So when it comes to  who should be elected the next president, just ask Wurtzbach, Manny Pacquiao or Aldub. Whomever they choose or endorse will be a sure winner!

Yet Another Scam At Manila’s International Airport: Laglag Piso

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila can never seem to escape the headlines.

Just months after the laglag bala (drop a bullet) scheme was uncovered, a new scam is all but brewing. (Laglag bala was a scheme in which unsuspecting airline passengers were questioned and detained after airport personnel supposedly found live bullets in their bags and luggage — all for the purpose of extorting money).

The new scam is called laglag piso (drop the peso) and it involves what appears to be a collusion between airport security and taxi operators.

Foreigners arriving at NAIA are offered a taxi ride to their hotel or destination and are handed a rate card that quotes the fixed fare in U.S. dollars, instead of Philippine pesos.  The dollar rates are not only illegal, but exhorbitant. What could be a fare of just a few hundred pesos can turn out to be thousands of pesos, in dollar equivalent.

When questioned about the newly-discovered scam, Manila International Airport Authority General Manager Joseph Angel Honrado said he has no control over the activities at the airport.  “My role is merely to coordinate.”

It’s exactly what he said when questioned in the Philippine Senate about the laglag bala scheme.

Traveling to Manila?  Drop the peso. Hang on to your U.S. dollar. It will go a long way. Away from your wallet, that is!

Philippines’ Megan Young Stripped Of 2013 Miss World Crown

Will the real 2013 Miss World please step forward?
Will the real 2013 Miss World please step forward?

LONDON, Great Britain (The Adobo Chronicles) – Filipinos have barely recovered from that momentary stripping of the Miss Universe crown from Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach when yet another of their beloved international beauty queens — Megan Young — was stripped of her Miss World crown.

This time, the stripping of the crown did not come from a pageant host but from a website (timetobreak.com) that lists the top 20 most beautiful Miss World title holders of all time.

Not only did this site snub the stunning Young in its list of 20, it also took away her crown and put it on the head of Miss Cameroon, Denise Valerie Ayena.

We all know for a fact that the 2013 Miss World was Miss Philippines.
