BEIJING, China (The Adobo Chronicles, Tokyo Bureau) – Once every four years, the calendar counts 366 days in a year, as opposed to the usual 365 days. It’s because every four years is a leap year which means there are 29, instead of 28 days in February.
But lo and behold, the year 2018 (not a leap year) only has 364 days because February 14 has been scratched from the calendar.
It is a phenomenon that has baffled historians, politicians, sociologists and religious leaders.
To add insult to injury, Ferbruary 14 this year is not only Valentine’s Day but also Ash Wednesday. The Catholic Church has urged its followers to skip Valentine’s celebration in order to appropriately commemorate Ash Wednesday, a day of fasting and abstinence.
MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Remember when Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque hopped onto an MRT train to commiserate with Metro Manila commuters?
Well, he liked it so much that he’s doing it again on January 7, in observance of World No Trousers Day. It is a day when commuters — from San Francisco to London — drop their trousers while riding the trains to work.
Roque told The Adobo Chronicles that he prepared long and hard for this, shedding a lot of weight in order to look good for the cameras. (See photo for artist’s rendition of Roque sans his trousers.)
Members of the Senate and House of Representatives will be joining Roque in this once-in-a-lifetime commute.
SAN FRANCISCO, California (The Adobo Chronicles, San Francisco Bureau) – At about this time of year, the President of the United States pardons a couple of turkeys and saves them from being butchered for the traditional Thanksgiving dinner.
But leave it to San Francisco activists to do much, much more. They want to totally ban Thanksgiving dinners that feature turkeys and ham.
In a protest action at San Francisco’s Westfield Mall (of course, at the food court), the activists declared that turkeys (and pigs) are not food. “Eating them is violence,” they said.
But how about the other living creatures like chicken, cows and fish? Or flies and roaches? They, too, have rights.
