COMELEC: Whoever Wins On May 9 Will Not Be The Duly-Elected President Of The Philippines

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – The Commission on Elections (COMELEC), the constitutional body that oversees Philippine elections, made a stunning announcement today.  It ruled that whoever wins in the May 9 elections will not be the duly-elected president of the Philippines.

COMELEC Chairman Andres Bautista said that even if one of the 5 presidential candidates wins 100 percent of the votes, which is impossible, he or she will not have the true mandate of the Filipino people.

Bautista explained that only 54.4 Million Filipinos are registered to vote in this year’s elections, and that is just a little over 50 percent of the country’s total population of 102.4 Million.

“In a very unlikely scenario that one candidate gets 48 Million votes, that would not be enough to constitute a majority of the Filipino people,” Bautista explained.

In issuing its ruling, the COMELEC urged 100 percent of all registered voters to vote for one and the same candidate so that the winner gets a true majority.

Asked by The Adobo Chronicles what the solution would be if no one gets 100 percent of the votes on May 9, Bautista said the COMELEC will not have any choice but to declare the elections null and void and schedule a repeat election.  He also urged that if this happens, a nationwide campaign for increased voter registration should immediately be undertaken.

Kris Aquino To Seek Presidential Pardon For Election Law Violation

image.jpegMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Election lawyer Emil Marañon III, in a Thought Leader’s piece on Rappler, said presidential sister Kris Aquino broke the law when she rode a presidential chopper to go to the campaign sortie of administration standard bearer Mar Roxas in Cebu. Marañon cites Section 261 of the Omnibus Election Act that says “use of public facilities owned or controlled by the government for an election campaign” is prohibited.

Under the succeeding Section 264, violation of Section 261 (o) constitutes an election offense and is punishable “with imprisonment of not less than one year but not more than six years and shall not be subject to probation.” In addition, “the guilty party shall be sentenced to suffer disqualification to hold public office and deprivation of the right of suffrage.”

Conceding that jail time is inevitable for the election law violation, Kris has officially sought presidential pardon from her brother, NoyNoy Aquino.

Under the Philippine Constitution, pardoning felons is among the special powers granted to the president.

Philippine VP Jojo Binay Now Leads Polls For President

image.jpegMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Free education and free heatlh care for all — these are promises the candidates for Philippine president have been making in their campaigns.

In a poor country like the Philippines, these two issues are quite popular among voters.

But one candidate for president seems to have struck the perfect chord that he has now overtaken frontrunner Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte in a new national poll.  With just less than two weeks before the May 9 elections, Vice President Jojo Binay now leads the 5-candidate pack by a commanding 65%.

He has gained the overwhelming support and confidence especially among senior citizens, the LGBT community and teenage girls.

His promise, made during a campaign stop in Camarines Sur province, was to provide free manicure and pedicure for all.  The Rappler reports.
