Rodrigo Duterte And Donald Trump: East Meets West

NEW YORK, New York (The Adobo Chronicles, Washington Bureau) – It was a secret, quickly-arranged meeting, captured only through the lens of an iPhone.  Philippine presumptive President-elect Rodrigo Duterte came face to face with presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.  It happened in an undisclosed penthouse office in New York City.

Duterte, described by Western media as the “Donald Trump of the East,” came in his trademark collared t-shirt, a sharp contrast to Trump’s suit and tie.

Trump spoke in English while Duterte spoke in Taglish — a mixture of English and Tagalog, the Philippines’ national language. Sources close to Duterte said the tough-talking, foul-mouthed mayor of Davao City blurted out some Filipino expletives here and there.

While no details of the meeting were released to the media, many are speculating that Trump had sought the advice of Duterte on how he can win in November’s U.S. general elections and how to deal with a female opponent (presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton).  Duterte had two female opponents for the presidency: Senators Grace Poe and Miriam Defensor-Santigao.

When the meeting was over, Trump treated Duterte to a catered lunch of steak and lobsters, but the mayor asked for dried fish, sour soup and rice.  While Trump consumed his steak and lobster with pure gold silverware, Duterte chose to eat with his bare hands, just like he normally does.

Overall, it was a meeting like no other – a meeting of two future (?) world leaders. We’ll revisit this in November!

Change Is Coming: Move Over, Barong Tagalog

The Barong Tagalog, left

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – The suit and tie is to America. The Barong Tagalog is to the Philippines.

Since the time of the Spanish occupation of the Philippines, Filipino males have always donned the Barong Tagalog for formal and special occasions. Made of local transparent fabric, this official male Filipino attire has never failed to regale fashion experts and dignitaries like U.S. President Barack Obama who absolutely looks stunning in a barong.

But with the election of a new president, change is coming.

President-elect Rodrigo Duterte is known to be very uncomfortable in a barong.  Photo after photo of Duterte during the campaign period shows him in his favorite, red, white and black checkered polo shirt.

As he prepares to take office, the country’s clothing experts are predicting that in no time at all, the barong will go out of fashion.  In its place will be Duterte’s trademark checkered shirt.

So Filipino men, go get yours so that you won’t be left out of the “in crowd.”

Would the checkered shirt eventually replace the barong as the Philippines’ national dress for men?

Also, it’s time to retire the yellow t-shirt of the PNoy administration.

Duterte, Pacquiao Announce Respective First Official Acts

imageMANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Unofficial President-elect Rodrigo Duterte and Senator-elect Manny Pacquiao both announced today what their first official act would be on their first day in office.

For his part, the Davao city mayor says he will raise the drug problem to the level of a national security threat and create a ‘ranger-trained’ division in the army.  He is expected to do this through an Executive Order.

As for Pacquiao, a devout Christian, he says that he will immediately author and sponsor a Senate bill that would permanently outlaw the death penalty.

Capital punishment was suspended via Republic Act No. 9346, which was signed by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on 24 June 2006. The bill followed a vote held in Congress earlier that month which overwhelmingly supported the abolition of the practice. The penalties of life imprisonment and reclusion perpetua (detention of indefinite length, usually for at least 30 years) replaced the death penalty.

Duterte, along with other newly-elected politicians, favor the reinstatement of the death penalty.

The champion boxer says he will call his proposed legislation, “Saved by the Bill.”
