Rappler, Vera Files To Be Banned In Singapore

SINGAPORE (The Adobo Chronicles, Singapore Bureau) –  The Associated Press is reporting that Singapore has passed a law criminalizing publication of fake news and allowing the government to block and order the removal of such content.

The Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Bill passed Wednesday night by a vote of 72-9, a lawmaker with the opposition Worker’s Party, Daniel Goh, said on Twitter.

The law bans falsehoods that are prejudicial to Singapore or likely to influence elections and requires service providers to remove such content or allows the government to block it. Offenders could face a jail term of up to 10 years and hefty fines.

The new law would all but ban Rappler and Vera Files in Singapore.  Both have been designated fact-checkers of the social media network, Facebook.

A news media analyst based in Singapore told The Adobo Chronicles that because Rappler and Vera Files post their verdict on fake news on their respective sites, they would be covered by the new law since, in effect, they are still a colluding party liable for publishing the fake news they are checking.

Makes sense.

Robredo To Step Down As VP If None Of The Otso Diretso Makes It To Magic 12?

562623B3-0A69-4EDF-8C64-3F9449E63C43QUEZON CITY, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Quezon City Bureau) – After all, Leni Robredo has some delicadeza left in her. She is promising to vacate her position as Vice President if none of the Otso Diretso Senatorial candidates makes it to the top 12 in Monday’s Philippine midterm elections.

While this may be wishful thinking on the part of many Filipinos, they are hoping that Robredo will be woman enough to take full responsibility for a possible zero win for the eight Opposition candidates.  She has taken on the responsibility of “leading the Opposition,” but a zero win for the Otso would mean a failure of that leadership.

Already,  Otso has scored zero in as far as the endorsement by the block-voting Iglesia Ni Cristo is concerned. None in the Opposition slate made it to the INC endorsement. Is this a foreboding of what will happen on May 13?

Stay tuned!

Donald Trump Wants Philippine-style Presidential Term

WASHINGTON, D.C. (The Adobo Chronicles, Washington Bureau) –  Donald Trump and Rodrigo Duterte were both elected in 2016, but the U.S. President will only serve a four-year term compared to the Philippine President’s six.

Now, Trump wants to change his current term to six years, following that of Duterte’s.

It all began when Trump supporter and head of Liberty University (an Evangelical Christian University) Jerry Falwell, Jr.  said that two years need to be added to the President’s current term as payback for “time stolen by this corrupt failed coup.” (Referring to the Mueller investigation).

The American President not only agreed with Falwell. He also argued that “if a former U.S. colony like the Philippines can have a six-year term President, why can’t we?”

He then urged his minions in the Republican Party to start the process of amending the U.S. Constitution.
