CALIFORNIANS BOYCOTT THE NEW YORK TIMES OVER PEAS IN GUACAMOLE

Guacamole with green peas? Eeeww!
Guacamole with green peas?  Hell no!

SAN FRANCISCO, California ( The Adobo Chronicles® ) – You’ve heard the phrase, “Don’t mess with Texas,” before. But Californians have just made one thing clear to The New York Times and to the world: “Don’t mess with Guacamole!”

California  avocado growers, taqueria owners, and guacamole fans criticized NYT for suggesting that people add English green peas to this  avocado classic.

A NYT article written by Melissa Clark  described the peas addition as “one of those radical moves that is also completely obvious after you taste it.”

Apparently, Californians disagree and have taken to social media to call for a boycott of NYT. In just the last 24 hours, the Times has seen a significant number of subscription cancellations for both its print and digital editions.

Even popular tortilla chip brands like Frito-Lay and Doritos have joined the chorus and are reportedly adding a warning to their label and packaging: “Not to be eaten with anything that has green peas in it.”

U.S. PINOYS, MEXICANS CELEBRATE MARRIAGE EQUALITY IN A BIG WAY

imageSAN FRANCISCO, California (The Adobo Chronicles® ) – From San Diego to Miami, from Salt Lake City to Anchorage, gay men and women are celebrating a victory of a lifetime: the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that marriage is a constitutional right for all.

But no other celebration is as big as that of San Francisco, especially among LGBT people of color.

Forget about the wave of rainbow colors enveloping Facebook profile pictures. The San Francisco celebration is big and it involves — what else — food!

Mexicans can now order their burritos wrapped in shiny, rainbow-colored foil, courtesy of the food chain, Chipotle. A full-page ad in the San Francisco Chronicle even greeted readers with “Homo estás?”  (How are y’al doing, homos?).

Filipinos, on the other hand, can now enjoy rainbow-colored ingredients in their halo-halo, the all-time Pinoy favorite dessert/snack, similar to the Hawaiian shaved ice. Don’t forget to ask for an extra scoop of ube, that sweet and creamy purple stuff!

Ah, savour the taste of freedom and equality. Everything is so much more fun living in San Francisco — that is, if you can afford the rent.

WORD WAR BETWEEN THE PHILIPPINES AND MALAYSIA: BEST AND WORST FOOD

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (The Adobo Chronicles®)  –A word war is brewing between the Philippines and its neighbor country, Malaysia.

And no, it has nothing to do with the Philippines’ claim over Malaysian-occupied Sabah, nor the territorial dispute between the two countries over the Spratly islands in the South China Sea, which also involves China and other Southeast Asian nations.

It is all about food. Yes, food.

Shortly after a CNN report named the Philippines the second best food destination in the world, next only to Taiwan, Malaysian celebrity chef  Datuk Redzuawan opposed the survey results, saying that sixth placer Malaysia should have topped the list.

“Blessed with an abundance of seafood, tropical fruits and creative cooks, there’s more to Filipino food than the mind-boggling balut (duck embryo),” CNN said in its report on Monday.

It highlighted the world-famous adobo, which it said was originally Mexican that Filipinos devised as a cooking method. “And that is exactly why the Philippines should not have garnered second place,” the Malaysian chef argued. “ All its foods are copycats from Spain, China, Japan and the U.S.”

In response to the Malaysian criticism, Filipino Chef Claude Tayag, whose version of the adobo was featured in the CNN report, challenged Redzuawan to a one-on-one “Cook-off,” where either chef would prepare his best local cuisine in a show to be broadcast live from the Mall of Asia in Manila.

White House Executive Chef Cristeta Comerford has been invited to judge the competition, to the objection of Redzuawan.  Comerford is Filipina.

The date is yet to be determined.

The Adobo Chronicles® will be among the sponsors of the cook-off.
