PRIDE MONTH: Gay Filipinos Drop Yellow From The Rainbow Flag

MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles, Manila Bureau) – Members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community in the Philippines are celebrating two very significant events this June — the inauguration of President-elect Rod Duterte and international (gay) Pride Month.

But they are also making an important political statement by dropping the yellow from the gay rainbow colors.

A spokesperson for the Supreme Coalition of Filipino LGBT Organizations (SCFLO) told The Adobo Chronicles that the color yellow has a bad reputation in the country.  It represents the misguided politics of the Aquino administration and his Liberal Party (LP) — politics that has not been friendly to LGBTs and the rest of the population.

In fact, President Aquino had repeatedly said that he was undecided on legalizing gay marriage because he is not sure if it will be good for children to have same-sex parents.

During the last presidential campagin, LP bet Mar Roxas made it clear that he was not in favor of divorce and same-sex marriage.

Duterte, on the other hand, stands in support of LGBT rights. Though he sometimes publicly throws around pejorative terms like queer, Duterte has also firmly condemned discrimination against the LGBT community in the Philippines. He has said that as President, he would consider legalizing same-sex marriage and supports allowing LGBT people to serve in the military. In an appearance on a Philippine talk show last summer, he said that he’d have no issue with his son if he came out as gay, and said that “everyone deserves to be happy.”

So, as Pinoys rejoice in the swearing in of the new LGBT-friendly president, they are also celebrating Pride by displaying the gay rainbow colors — minus the yellow.

Happy Pride, everyone!

HOLLYWOOD, California (The Adobo Chronicles, Los Angeles Bureau) – Eat your heart out, Mississippi, North Carolina, and other states and cities with or mulling about anti-transgender laws.  ‘Star Trek Beyond’ has a response. A big response!

Directed by Justin Lin (‘Fast and Furious’), the latest in the Star Trek saga features not only new actors playing traditional roles, but also a new transgender character. (We can’t reveal the name of the new character or the actor playing the role — as yet).

This revelation comes in the midst of recent claims of the ‘whitewashing’ of Hollywood films: the lack of African American roles or the continuing phenomenon of white actors playing Asian characters.

“It’s a victory for the transgender community,” said a spokesperson for the Transgender Law Center in the San Francisco Bay Area, “it’s about time.”

It wasn’t clear as of press time whether the transgender character will be played by a transgender actor.

The Adobo Chronicles tried to reach legislators in Mississippi and North Carolina who, we understand, are all avid Star Trek fans, to get their comments on this earth-shattering announcement from Paramount Pictures. We have not received a response.

Dim Sum: Donald Trump Commemorates Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month

imageNEW YORK, New York (The Adobo Chronicles, Washington Bureau) –  Yesterday, presumptive Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump tried to endear himself to Hispanic voters by celebrating Cinco de Mayo with a bowl of tacos at the penthouse suite of his New York Trump Towers. That was lunch.

Realizing that May was Asian-Pacific Islander Heritage Month which commemorates the immigration of the first Japanese to the United States on May 7, 1843, and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, he had a different idea for dinner.

To celebrate the occasion, and in an effort to win the crucial Asian American vote in November’s presidential elections, Trump asked his personal chef to serve him some dim sum for dinner.

The real estate mogul has been very critical of China in his campaign speeches, but to set the record straight, he said, “I love the Chinese!”
