MANILA, Philippines (The Adobo Chronicles) – When Davao City Mayor and presidential candidate Rodrigo Duterte cursed Pope Francis during a speech in Manila the other day, the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) didn’t find it funny like many in the audience did.  Instead, it issued a strong statement condemning Duterte.

“When a revered and loved and admired man like Pope Francis is cursed by a political candidate and the audience laugh, I can only bow my head and grieve in great shame. My countrymen have gone to the dregs,” said Bishop Socrates Villegas, CBCP president.  He added:  “Vulgarity is corruption. When we find vulgarity funny, we have really become beastly and barbaric as a people.”

Well, the CBCP statement didn’t sit well with Duterte either.

The mayor called out the Catholic Church for its child abuse scandals, claiming he, himself, was a victim of child abuse by priests during his days at Ateneo de Davao, a Catholic university in his hometown.

Duterte virtually waged war against the Philippine Catholic Church, saying that “I have secrets, they have secrets.”

But after attending mass at a local church, Duterte, a Catholic, called for a ceasefire. “If you leave me alone, I will leave you alone,” he said, while urging his colleagues in Philippine Congress to pass a new legislation that would mandate the separation of church and politicians.

The CBCP is yet to respond to Duterte’s call for al ceasefire.

MISS UNIVERSE PAGEANT IS HIRING FOR A FILIPINO COPY EDITOR

imageLAS VEGAS, Nevada (The Adobo Chronicles) – The Miss Universe Organization owned by Donald Trump is hiring for a copyeditor to join its fabulous team of producers, choreographers, designers, script writers, stage managers and public relations officers, and it is specifically looking for a Filipino.

This, after media cameras recorded and published videos and photographs of Miss Universe staff showcasing the sashes of  contestants signed up for the international pageant to be held December 20 at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas.

Philippines was clearly misspelled as “Phillippines” and that didn’t sit well with Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach and the Binibining Pilipinas Charities (BSP), franchise holder of the Miss Universe Pageant in Manila.

BSP threatened to withdraw from the competition unless the Miss Universe Pageant got its act together.

Trump  was apparently upset at the booboo and ordered his staff to immediately hire a Filipino copyeditor.

“I can’t afford not to have Miss Philippines in the pageant,” Trump said. “Philippines is always a top contender for the crown and the pageant would be incomplete without a Miss Philippines.”

OBAMA TO PHILIPPINE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE GRACE POE: ‘I FEEL YOU!’

imagePARIS, France (The Adobo Chronicles) – U.S. President Barack Obama has finally broken his silence over the Philippine presidential race that’s turning out to be the most controversial ever in the political  history of the former American colony.

Speaking to reporters in Paris where he is attending a world summit on climate change, Obama said, ‘I have been informed that a division of the Commision on Elections has ruled to disqualify Senator Grace Poe from running for president on citizenship grounds. The popular senator and frontrunner in national polls is a foundling and is facing several disqialification complaints claiming she is not a natural-born citizen.  Like in the U.S., only natural-born cirtizens can run for president.

I feel you,’ Obama said about Poe, ‘because I have been in the same boat.’

Througout his presidential career, Obama has been dodged with accusations that he was born outside of the U.S., despite having released copies of his Hawaii birth certificate.

“I know the truth will eventually prevail, and that those who seek to discredit you will realize that they are making a huge mistake.’

Upon hearing of Obama’a comments, Republican presidential candidate and frontrunner Donald Trump, a known birther, instructed his campaign staff to look into the cases against Poe so that he can make his own statement about the Philippine presidential race.

‘As a candidate for president, I have to show my supporters and the American voters that I have the capacity and commitment  to deal with foreign affairs, especially if it involves the birther issue,’ Trump said. ‘If Poe cannot show proof she was born in the Philippines, I will personally oppose her candidacy as well.  If I am president of the United States, there can only be one American president.’ (Poe’s opponents are also claiming that by virtue of her dual citizenship, she is an American citizen.)
